Putting The Focus Back Into The D

IMO, the road to winning the SB depends on improvements on D; moreso with pass rush vs. pass coverage. Very optimistic about this upcoming 2013 team.

I think we'll be ok.  Better than ok actually.  I expect Jones and Hightower to have better years now that they are in year two.  Wilfork and Mayo are rocks.  Spikes and Nink just keep getting better.  A full year of Talib who will be playing for a new contract will be very nice, and I supsect of all the options we will have at #2, that positon will be a force.  Safety is a question mark but has solid potential.  And we have a number of rookies this year that can rush the passer, and I'm betting one of them will stand out.

I'm expecting this years defense to be a pleasant surprise to a lot of people.

I'm actually most exited about the rookie Collins. Adding a bookend who can also cover could make NE's job a lot easier.

At any given rate, NE needs to increase it's ability to pressure opposing QBs.

I'm curious what kind of role Collins will have at first.  And they have a guy like Wilson who fits their need for a guy who can handle TEs and who can bring some pop.

I agree with the extra help at pass rush, and that's why BB should splurge a bit on a guy like Abraham, or even Freeney if they feel like he's a fit.

I wish there was more film on him out there on the internet, right now there is only two games...against Nebraska and Houston I believe. He looks really good in the Nebraska game and you can see they use him in a lot of different ways.

    What about this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTSe4Dk67cc

Seriously though.  This guy's athleticism is insane.  I hope he puts it all together.

It really is. He is more a raw athlete than a rusher, but refined in the field. You usually peg a rusher to be a 3rd down guy, because that is the easiest path to the field for a rookie DE or OLB. You don't usually pin a guy to the board thinking he will be a coverage specialist out of college, because it's usually pretty game plan specific and kind of sophisticated from a game knowledge stand point.

But his early talent indicates the latter.

I think that is why brining in a vet like Abraham would be doubly important ... it buys this kid time.

At the same time, I am at the point, given the extreme youth turnover on defense (really, how many young players don't even make it three seasons here before they are cut or let go) that I almost favor just letting the kid play it out to see what he has now over bringing in more aged rental players. We've been hearing about a "young defense" for six years now ... but the problem is they are caught in arrested development because they keep having to let young failed defenders go and redrafting the same spots.

The offense could be equally "young" if Vollmer, Solder, Gronk, Hern, Ridley, Wendell, Vereen, and a few others had been busts too ... but they were good, so now they are turning into veterans.

definitely a start.  It's also on my wish list that the Patriots be a little more aggressive in defensive play calling, run some additional stunts to confuse opposing offenses, different looks, more aggressive between the 20s to get the defense off the field and give the offense a chance to score (even more) points.....lol
