    Ridley and Fumbles

A lot of people have been commenting on Ridley’s inability to hold onto the ball.  While I agree he can improve in that area, I think it’s a little over exaggerated considering others at his position.

Jamaal Charles and Willis McGahee had more fumbles than Ridley.

Bryce Brown, Reggie Bush, Fred Jackson, Marshawn Lynch, LeSean McCoy and Alfred Morris all had the same amount of fumbles as Ridley.

Ridley had more rushing touchdowns than everyone listed but Morris.

He's not perfect but, let's give him some time....  I wanted to make a comparison to him and Tiki Barber as I remember a lot of noise about him and his inability to hold onto the ball.  But Tiki had 3 or 4 seasons of 8 or more fumbles!

Again, Ridley needs to do a better job of holding onto the ball, but I feel this guy is a top 10 talent at the position.

    Thoughts?

    Re: Ridley and Fumbles

Those other running backs don't play for BB .  . . Ridley had 5 in just over 400 touches last season but he had 2 others that were "saved" because of penalities called on the play . . . I think the guy is a top talent but there is other talent on the team and if he fumbles a few times early he could see himself deep on the bench because Bolten has been looking good and Winn has some talent (hoping they can hide him on the practice squad).  Funny the Law Firm never had a fumble in 500 touches here in New England but had 5 last year!

The Giants brough in a specialist to work with Tiki and he changed the way he held the ball and stopped the fumbling in the later part of his career  . . .  so maybe Bill will bring in someone specifically to work with Ridley.

Exactly, Tiki had 1 and 3 fumbles in his first two years, and then had 7-9 fumbles basically for the next 5 years.  I wouldn't quit on Ridley just yet is my point.  The coaching staff I am sure will make ball security a focal point in his training going forward.

I'm more concerned about additional concussions going forward. He really got his bell rung.

I totally agree that ball security is essential for any skill player on a BB coached team.  However, I also totally agree that the issue has been a somewhat overblown in Ridley's case.  The examples you cited bring that into pretty clear focus.

    Re: Ridley and Fumbles

I've voiced the same opinion over the past year, getzo.  His "fumblitis" is extremely overblown.  He's on par with the average fumble rate of starting running backs across the NFL.  A lot of Patriots fans, and Boston as a whole, demand perfection at the position or else the player is undermined and deemed to suck.  Players are always undervalued in Boston; it's the nature of the city's fans.  Not saying that there's anything really wrong with that because it's a product of being a diehard and overzealous fanbase.  I'm just saying that it sometimes taints reality.

    Ridley is fine.

    Re: Ridley and Fumbles

He has 2 lost fumbles in 37 playoff rushes. The concern isn't that he doesn't fumble much while he is running up stats against the weak teams during the season. The concern is an atrocious fumble rate when it matters most.

After the Welker drops in the playoffs (problem solved) Ridley's fumbles have to be a major concern. You must be even more reliable come playoff time than in the season, not less.

I agree.  All-world Ray Rice gave the ball up 3 times in the postseason and lost all 3, including one in the Superbowl that could have killed the Ravens.  I don't see many people saying Ray Rice has fumbleitis or is soft.  Yes, Ridley can do a better job.  He needs to protect the ball when making contact, which he usually initiates.  Re: the Pollard hit, he got knocked-the-eff-out trying for a few extra yards.  I'm thinking he learned from that mistake.  Secure the ball first, learn to absorb contact rather than trying to be a pile driver all the time.  I think he will be fine.

    Re: Ridley and Fumbles

i think prior to his fumble against the Ravens, it was overexagerated - especially when compared the the fumble rate of Law Firm.

That being said, he has fumbled in training camp, and got upset cuz Arrington hit him harder than expected for training camp.  Mebbe a little "ptsd" from Pollards hit.

    We will see...

    Re: Ridley and Fumbles

With the new rules ridleys fumble against the ravens would have been called a personal foul on both teams and it would have been offsetting penalties. Both players would have been fined by the NFL and the play would have been replayed.

Now you got the easy part done telling me about it.

Does that handshaped bruise on your back hurt?
