When you think about those 49er teams from the 1980s, the first name that gets mentioned is Joe Montana because of his great play along with the rest of the offense that included Jerry Rice, John Taylor, Roger Craig, Tom Rathman, Brent Jones, and others. The offense did what they did to win those 4 Super Bowls, but what gets overlooked a lot are those defenses they had in the 1980s. Those 49er defenses don't get as much credit for their part in those 4 Super Bowls. In all 4 Super Bowls, those defenses were ranked high in both points and yards allowed. In 1981, the 49ers Defense ranked #2 in pts. allowed & Yds. allowed. In 1984, the 49ers Defense ranked #1 in pts. allowed & #10 in Yds. allowed. In 1988, the 49ers Defense ranked #8 in pts. allowed & #3 in yds. allowed. In 1989, the 49ers Defense ranked #3 in pts. allowed & #4 in yds. allowed. Those defenses were stingy and the person that led those defenses was Ronnie Lott. While Joe Montana and Co. were at their greatest, so was the defense as well.
