updated roster after week 1 of camp

    NEPD Editor: Mike Loyko

Training camp moves fast and the roster is in a constant state of flux until early September. Even though the Patriots are only through the first week of practices and a pre-season game hasn’t been played — the roster has changed.

With an expanded roster it doesn’t take much to go from on the 53 man roster to the roster bubble or from the roster bubble to the streets. Performances on the field have already altered what the roster will look like when the Patriots take the field against the Buffalo Bills on September 8th.

Here’s the 2013 Patriots projected roster after the first week of camp.

    Offensive Roster (24)

Quarterbacks (3) – Tom Brady, Ryan Mallett, Tim Tebow

Running Backs (4) – Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, LeGarrette Blount, Leon Washington

Tight End (4) – Rob Gronkowski, Michael Hoomanawanui, Jake Ballard, Zach Sudfeld (Daniel Fells if Gronk on PUP)

Wide Receiver (6) – Danny Amendola, Aaron Dobson, Josh Boyce, Julian Edelman, Kenbrell Thompkins, Matthew Slater

Offensive Tackles (3) – Nate Solder, Sebastian Vollmer, Will Svitek

Interior Linemen (4) – Logan Mankins, Marcus Cannon, Ryan Wendell, Dan Connolly

    Defensive Roster (26)

Defensive End (6) – Chandler Jones, Rob Ninkovich, Justin Francis, Jake Bequette, Michael Buchanan, Marcus Benard

Defensive Tackles (4) – Vince Wilfork, Tommy Kelly, Marcus Forston, Jermaine Cunningham*

Linebackers (6) – Jerod Mayo, Brandon Spikes, Dont’a Hightower, Jamie Collins, Dane Fletcher, Steve Beauharnais

Cornerbacks (5) - Aqib Talib, Alfonzo Dennard, Kyle Arrington, Logan Ryan, Ras-I Dowling

Safeties (5) – Devin McCourty, Adrian Wilson, Steve Gregory, Tavon Wilson, Duron Harmon

Specialists (3) – Stephen Gostkowski, Ryan Allen, Danny Aiken

Last Players On: Marcus Benard, Jermaine Cunningham, Ryan Allen, Steve Beauharnais, LeGarrette Blount

Final Cuts: Kamar Aiken, Nate Ebner, Brandon Bolden, Marquice Cole, Daniel Fells, Niko Koutouvides

Practice Squad (8): Markus Zusevics, Kamar Aiken, Joe Vellano, Cory Grissom, Jason Vega, George Winn, Mark Harrison, Brandon Jones

PUP or Short-Term I.R. Candidates: Armond Armstead, Rob Gronkowski

    Quick Thoughts

    - Defensive Tackle is still very thin. With only three true DT standing out, the team maybe forced to keep Jermaine Cunningham who can play inside in sub-packages. This is a position where I expect the Patriots to be proactive picking up and trying out released and FA DTs.

    - Ryan Allen over Zoltan Mesko. Going out on a limb here, but Allen has a stronger leg and makes much less money. In time he could be a superior punter to Zoltan.

    - It looks like the team could keep up to seven wide receivers. Kamar Aiken and Michael Jenkins are likely fighting for the last spot.

    - The versatility of the entire offensive line allows the Patriots to keep only seven linemen.

    - Marcus Benard sneaks on as a situational rusher, but his spot is very tenuous in my opinion.

    - Defensive End is still bunched up. The Pre-Season games are going to be crucial to sort things out.

    - The secondary looks locked in at this point. Only players that could fight their way on are Nate Ebner and Marquice Cole.

    - All draft picks make the roster. It will be very tough to get Buchanan or Beauharnais to the Practice Squad so they make the roster.

    - If Rob Gronkowski starts the season on the PUP list, then Daniel Fells will make the roster as the 4th TE.

    - Because the team used a 2nd and 3rd round draft choice on Safeties, Wilson and Harmon’s spot are locks to be on the roster. Both Harmon and Wilson will play large rolls on special teams, which makes Nate Ebner expendable. Especially since he contributes little to the defense.

    - Tim Tebow makes the roster without much consideration.

From what I saw Monday and what I have read about Allen i wouldn't be shocked if they cut Mesko.

Allen is legit and even if he gets cut he will be on an NFL roster by the end of the year.

Edleman gets cut.  That might be boldens spot.

Im still not sold on Tebow making the team either.

Now you got the easy part done telling me about it.

As I read all these projections of 6 WR's to start the year I am reminded that last year the Pats broke camp with only 4 WR's and 4 TE's.

I'm not sold on going into the season with only 7 OL, regardless of how versatile they are. I would replace Tebow with an 8th O-Lineman.

    Philski,

For some reason it won't let me reply directly to your message.  What is your thinking with Edelman getting cut?  IMO, he stays.  When healthy and given reps, he's proven to be a reliable target for Brady.  His versatility, familiarity with the system, and his toughness will all help keep him on the team.  I think there's a very rare chance he gets cut.

I agree with Wazzu that they'll keep 8 Olinemen.  However, I'm not sure it'll be at the expense of Tebow.  I have a feeling he stays.  Maybe Hooman or Bequette gets axed in favor of another lineman.

Cause he always gets injured. As a receiver IMO he's a jag. Washington will be better on ST. If edleman wants a chance then he better get on the field.

From what I've read, Hooman has been the best TE in camp so far. I seriously doubt that he gets cut.  Bequette, on the other hand, I could see getting the ax. We will have to let a pretty good player go to keep Tebow. How much is he really worth???

Yeah, but reports are that Sudfeld looks great, too.  Ballard (hopefully) will get up to speed so I think he's a better option than Hooman.  If all TEs are healthy, I think they go with Gronk, Suds, and Ballard.

I'm not sure what the plan is with Tebow but it sounds like they plan on keeping him around.  If they don't keep him, I'd want Hooman to stay because he can play that H-back hybrid role that is left in Hern's absence.  Either way, I see him as the 4th TE on this depth chart and that would be one of the positions to get the ax if Tebow is kept.

I guess we will see!  But I HIGHLY doubt Edelman gets cut.  His cut would surprise me a lot more than Hooman getting ousted.

Re: updated roster after week 1 of camp

Nice list. This is what I have (subtractions in red additions in blue)

    Offensive Roster (25)

Quarterbacks (2) – Tom Brady, Ryan Mallett, Tim Tebow

Running Backs (4) – Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, LeGarrette Blount, Leon Washington

Tight End (5) – Rob Gronkowski, Michael Hoomanawanui, Jake Ballard, Zach Sudfeld (Daniel Fells if Gronk on PUP), Ford

Wide Receiver (6) – Danny Amendola, Aaron Dobson, Josh Boyce, Julian Edelman, Kenbrell Thompkins, Matthew Slater

Offensive Tackles (4) – Nate Solder, Sebastian Vollmer, Will Svitek, Zusevics

Interior Linemen (4) – Logan Mankins, Marcus Cannon, Ryan Wendell, Dan Connolly,

    Defensive Roster (25)

Defensive End (5) – Chandler Jones, Rob Ninkovich, Jake Bequette, Michael Buchanan, Marcus Benard

Defensive Tackles (4) – Vince Wilfork, Tommy Kelly, Marcus Forston, Jermaine Cunningham*, Justin Francis

Linebackers (5) – Jerod Mayo, Brandon Spikes, Dont’a Hightower, Jamie Collins, Dane Fletcher, Steve Beauharnais

Cornerbacks (6) - Aqib Talib, Alfonzo Dennard, Kyle Arrington, Logan Ryan, Ras-I Dowling, Cole

Safeties (5) – Devin McCourty, Adrian Wilson, Steve Gregory, Tavon Wilson, Duron Harmon

Specialists (3) – Stephen Gostkowski, Ryan Allen, Danny Aiken, Zoltan Mesko

Tebow - I just don't see a way he makes this team as a QB. He is a horrible QB and his decision making is beyond bad. Unless he learns to hold kicks he just can't play on this team

OL - BB has never left camp with less than 8 OL and I can't see him leaving camp again without 8

Ford - the more I hear about the kid the more he grows on me. Not as good as Sudfeld but if you are running a 2 TE set you get as many bodies at the position as possible, especially if they have the ability to be swing receivers/FB's

Allen - looks to have the stronger leg but Mesko has proven to be beyond consistent in game time situations. You know how BB loves field position and I don't think he risks that on an unknown compared to the pro-bowl caliber punting Mesko has consistently given

Cunningham - I understand the logic but Francis also played inside last year too and actually stole that job from Cunningham at the end of last year. The position is awfully thin but imo Francis is the better option inside than Cunningham

Beauharnais - someone needs to make room and it could be either Beauharnais or Harmon at this point but I don't see both making the roster considering how little we've heard about them so far. Since the LB is stacked right now I can't see Beauharnais making the team. Not to mention BB cutting a reach in the 3rd? His ego is way to big to take that hit

I swear by lil 10 pound bearded baby Jesus

That's a real thin group of defensive tackles and pretty heavy on the ends, if that were to happen we would have to be running a 43, right? Because a lot of those ends are 43 types. As usual we will see a lot of roster shuffling at the end and heading into the first three weeks of the season, I think you're right, we will see a defensive tackle come aboard at some point.

It would be more 43 but don't forget larger DE's like Francis and Nink can move inside on passing downs. You really only need the big guys for running downs unless they are super athletic like Wilfork who just dominants regardless of down.

we are in agreement here. We have new young talent. I dont see how Jermaine sticks this year just being a situational rusher that may get 4 -5 sacks. They will roll w/Buchanan, Collins, etc to make up his limited production. I just see it as they know what he is, which aint much and other players have more potential

personally, I am not comfortable with the situation, and do not think the Pats are finished addressing the position. I simply wonder what is/will become available at this time. Did Pouha sign with anyone, and if not can he pass a physical? Is Seymour asking for too much $$$?

look, I think Vince is the best DT in football, and Kelly if used properly could be a very good player this year. But if Kelly is used too much, will he wear down? Will Vince? I like Fortson, and do think he could be the player that Lovie was....but I do not have a feel yet for any of the other DT candidates, but lets face it, it would be a longshot for any other DT on the roster to contribute.

still no word on Armstead....he could show up today at practice, or he could miss the season...

I really hope Armstead is ok, watching his film after we signed him Ive got to say he moves like nobody we have on the team at his size. I think for that fact alone the kid could of been a second round draft pick - guys that move like that get drafted high. I hope this isn't a situation where we never find out.

Didn't Seymore get picked up by Atlanta? I haven't checked, but if not I wouldn't mind seeing him come in...not going to happen, but I wouldn't mind taking a look.

Although I think we would all agree that it's entirely too early to accurately project a 53-man roster, I'm pretty comfortable suggesting that, give or take a couple, you can safely project 40 of those spots.  Of those remaining, areas where I would like to see additions to rkarp's projections include:

    -O line

    -D tackle

    -RB

Areas where I see possible reductions:

    -QB

    -WR

    -DE

    My 2 cents.
