I haven't seen the game yet (i live in Tucson AZ  and it is taping on my DVR as I type) but will watch it to see the good the bad and the ugly. Bill will use this game to hammer a lot of things home and I would rather see a game like this in pre season then one that counts!!!!!

That, to me, is probably one of only 3 good thing from this game - others are our starting D in the first half and Thompkins

    In response to wozzy's comment:

Thoughts on the game in game...

Detroit has the best D Line in football, if we had their players I'd beg to play the 4/3, they are scary.

Thompkins is an every down player, but we'll need Dobson and Boyce to be successful.

Edelmen proves his worth on a key third and 7, great athleticism.

Sudfeld finally makes a rookie play.

Play action got Sudfeld open, good execution on the play.

Joe Vellano, Bernard and Collins were playing in the first defensive series for the Pats, doesn't loook like Belichick is playing his first string but giving guys reps with the 1st teamers to see how they do.  It's preseason, BB doesn't think or care that the third game is supposed to be starters.

Mayo over ran the screen, learn the preseason lesson.  Gregory should have made the sack.

No defensive tackle beef on the field for the Pats = no pressure.

Bend don't break holds after a long Lions drive, field goal.

Blount returns a kick he shouldn't, takes it to the 22 yard line, pretty impressive.

Thompkins still has some lessons to learn, Brady hit him in the numbers on that third down.

Slater gets downfield faster than anyone I've seen on kickoffs, he is as good as advertised.

    Nink solid as a rock.

Belichick runs nickel the entire game.

Bolden really wants to make this team.

    And then Bolden fumbles.

Kelly is a mountain of a man.

    Dobson good concentration.

Vereen needs to follow blocks and be decisive inside.

Brady can't just laser focus on Thompkins anymore than Welker, mix it up guys.

Talib got burned by Bush on the screen, this is a pandemic.

Harmon didn't protect the middle of the field, TD.

Detroit is pretty good this year, we need to work on our special teams.

    Turnovers hurt.

Vereen fumbles in our own end, cut them all I guess...

Detroit came ready to play, Pats are asleep.

Ninck lives in the opponents backfield.

Soft zones for NE defense.... ok.

    Dobson, solid.

Develin was solid, most wouldn't notice.

Slay is a dirty player, rolls up Dobson in an MMA move.

Thompkins will burn people, he is a route running nightmare with Brady throwing to him.

Give Dobson some shots in the endzone.

    Vellano gets cut tomorrow.

    No Vince Wilfork is glaring.

Vollmer is our best offensive lineman.

    I need a #50 Pats jersey...

Wendling for Detroit is a special teams tackler.

Logan Ryan got jobbed on that third down penalty, sux being a rookie.

Collins comes out of nowhere... the guy finds the ball.

Mallett is wild, he needs to reel it in.

    Harmon good special teams tackle.

Adrian Wilson got some good tackling work in today.

    Tavon Wilson, nice stick.

    Blount runs downhill.

Thompkins has chemistry with Brady and Mallett... it might be Thompkins.

    Boyce is choice.

    Kline shows versatility playing center.

    Fletcher solid.

We need to defend the screen better, no Wilfork is a big reason why.

All in all this was a final screen test for some bubble players, we sat a lot of regulars in the first unit.  Next game will be a better showing.

Good Points Wozzy! I think a few things can be chacked up to preseason and no gameplans,. Are you as dissapointed as I was with A.W,? He seems to me, Uninterested. Is this jus him being a vet that will turn it on week 1? I dont know but Rodney played Balls to the wall every play of every game. Need to kill those comparisons now as AW may be too old to make a big impact.

My biggest complaint is that there is still nothing special about our special teams and our highest paid Lineman probably has the most penalties of all them and act likes a punk on the field instead of dominating like he should for his pay grade. Our line was very under whelming and couldnt make one yard on the ground against 1st team, yet they ran all over us. I hope it was just the absence of Vince. I like KT, he is my favorite WR on the team and I expect big things from him. We need to go get another safety that is cut from another team. Our depth is very worrisome

Re: Ups and Downs: NE vs DET

    In response to TFB12's comment:

The only UP I can really think of is Thompkins is a stud.  Right now he is the best receiver on the team.  Better then Amendola, better then Dobson.  This kid is good.

He's playing the toughest WR position. Amendola took over the game last week, but getting that many receptions in the slot is a whole lot easier than getting that many on the line.

The lions O line is horrible yet the Pats couldn't get to the QB.

I think they did a good job in the first half of stifling the Lions' passing attack and getting in Stafford's face. Ten of the points they gave up were allowed when the Lions got the ball around the Pats' 20.

I said I wanted Reggie Bush in the offseason, people laughed.  Reggie Bush made that Pats defense look like a Pop Warner team.  Bush would have been awesome in the Pats offense.  He is a stud catching passes out of the backfield, something the Pats love to do.

Bush is a player in the open field. He is soft. He seems to disappear at times. He has no clue how to run between the tackles. But he is outstanding in the open field. Anyone ripping NE for getting juked in the open field by this guy one on one obviously missed his career, and doesn't watch too much professional football.

    Arrington looked horrible out there.

Arrington isn't great outside the hashmarks .... we all knew that though.

Collins was all over the place last night..... in a bad way.

He had some really good contains in the first half. Plays most people don't notice. His play degraded later on in the game for sure.

Adrian Wilson was out there most of the game, I hardly noticed him.  Did he do anything?

His play also degraded. Just watching the second half, I can say his days of playing deep at safety are limited. He is smart and tough as nails .... but he has lost a step back there.

Sudfeld's fumble was bad.  But love how he runs his routes and can get open and catch the ball.  Love the way he blocks, he will be very good if he can stay healthy and hold onto the ball.

Ballard could be gone.  Everything I have been reading lately is about how bad he looks.  His leg isn't healthy yet and it shows in the way he plays.  Too bad, I thought the TE position was solid, it looks iffy at the moment.

O line looked terrible, I had flashbacks of the 2007 SB last night.

Yeah they did, lol. They got whipped. Svitek, Wendell, and Vollmer especially. There was one great run block thrown in the entire first half and it was a combo effort by Sudsy and Ballard.

Pretty solid analysis. What do you think of Adrian Wilson playing almost the whole game? Perillo and Hart thought it was a blow to his chances while Fauria thought he was just getting reps at a newer position(in the box safety). I don't know what to make of that.

I don't know. What do you think? If I had to guess, it would be this: in the first half he was in the "money" role, playing big nick and big dime. In the second half, with the scrubs, he was playing deep.

The 2nd half is "bubble" evaluation. So I'd think the 'whole game' needs to be split in half. 1.) He looks like he might be in a strong position to make the roster as a specialist "money" SS. 2.) BB isn't really sure about letting him play safety full time, or how much good he can doo over the middle ...

At this point, based on play, I'm saying a trio of Gregory/DMC/A. Wilson, with Harmon or T. Wilson kept around for depth.

It's too bad. SS was where NE needed to improve the most, but it looks like the might not have, except in that specialist role, where I'm sure Wilson will do better than Chung had.

Don't you have to add Leon Washington to this list?  I thought he was on the bubble coming in and he did nothing again.  Why in the world is he taking touchbacks in the second half in a pre-season game when he needs to show something?  Maybe he already knows he is a goner....

    Because you show fundamental technique.

He was great last night. Taking that punt that ended on the 1 shows real discipline. Once an incoming punt puts you at the ten, you are taught to let anything longer than two steps back go past you. The fact that the punter put a nasty stop shot on was fine.

Washington didn't return any kickoffs. There was a TB, but it was -7 yards deep. You do realize if he taken that out of the endzone he would have been increasing his chances at getting cut. You never take a -7 yard kick out of the endzone. The chances of getting past the 15 are really small.

All the problems of this team rolled into one in this game. Blockers that can't block, runners that can't run and a defense that can't defend. Complete incompetence.

Pre-season can't be taken too seriously, but we have seen these same issues front and center when it has mattered most as well.

This is a mediocre team with a great HC and QB. Boo and hiss to the GM for his mediocre work in providing players to the HC to put around that HOF QB.

Read where Dobson has played nervous and has been reason for drops.  I can't believe he didn't drop any passes last year and now looks like he has problems catching a pass.

Dobson = High Ceiling . KT = Gamer who may be at his ceiling but is consistent and ready to go now.

Dobson is probably dropping some now because guys are much bigger and faster on defense.

I like KT cuz he is Miami Hood Kid who isnt afraid of the moment and if he keeps his nose clean is gonna be a real find if he continues this progression. Ultimately you have Dobson in 2 years as your # 1, KT as a legit # 2 beating up on backups and Boyce as the slot. Good Future when u throw in Danny

You just made my case for cutting him.  With the kickoffs moved up most of the kickoffs go -5 to -10 yards deep now.  If all he is going to do is take a knee then no need to take up a space as he does not seem to be the punt return guy either.

Also, I get its fundamentals but as i said, it was a PRESEAON game.  All they talk about is how you work on situations and the like.  It would be better if he actually took those out and let them work on the kick-return rather then take the knee.  Thats what pre-season is for.

This makes zero sense. At what 'situation' are you supposed to try an take a kickoff out deep?

In preseason you are demonstrating fundamental situational awareness: like where you are on the field, and what you should be doing there.

And no ... I could not disagree stronger. Having strong special teams is huge in the NFL. It is a three phase game ... offense, defense, special teams.

Sorry, but the best teams in the NFL (SF, Baltimore, Denver, et al) maintain strong special teams units throughout the spectrum. Even New England was strong last year, but on the strength of kicking/kick coverage.

That they are in the bottom half in kick returning is something that needs to improve.
