Vereen - BB's take on the man.

Coach Bill Belichick suggested that RB Shane Vereen is ideally used as a "space" player as opposed to a high-volume interior runner who can sustain a rushing attack.

"He's an elusive guy -- he's got good balance, plenty of strength for his size," said Belichick. "[He’s] not the biggest guy, but plenty of strength; he gives us some versatility there. I think he's able to run inside, run in some traffic, but he's a good space player, on the edge and in the passing game." Vereen is more of a complementary back as opposed to a threat to Stevan Ridley's carries.

The guy has to be able to stay on the field or he is gone next year with Demps coming back.  Lot of talent but it does no good on the bench!

I see Demps threatening Woodhead more more than Vereen.  No matter what, I think they keep Vereen until his rookie deal expires.  2nd round picks usually get the benefit of proving their worth a little longer in most cases.

The Patriots have plenty of weapons , it's a matter of consistently putting it together in games.

repeat...it depends who the opponant is that week. the Pats will game plan specific depending on who they are playing. they will not have a vanilla game plan on offense, as we saw against the Jets, who are slow and vulnerable to the outside speed of Vereen.

    BB adds....

Coach Bill Belichick suggested that Shane Vereen has moved up the depth chart regardless of Brandon Bolden's (knee) health going forward.

"Hopefully he'll get more opportunities, because I think he can contribute for us," said Belichick. "More of it is, Shane being healthy and Shane being ready to go, than waiting for something to happen to somebody else. It's more a case of him really being able to go out there and being the player that he is." As the satellite-back complement to Stevan Ridley, Vereen should be owned in 12-team fantasy leagues. We would rather roster him than La'Rod Stephens-Howling this week.

I think when they drafted him everyone knew he was going to be a third down back, the question two years later is why they drafted him? Woodhead does the same thing and we own him for cheap. We had much more pressing issues on defense at the time and we still do - if Vareen turns into Kevin Faulk then I'll know why, but it would help if he could stay on the field for a change.

I think they drafted him hoping he'd be better than Woodhead. So far, though, Woodhead is still ahead of him. Vereen probably has better physical potential, but Woodhead continues to do the "little" things right (like pass block effectively).

Vereen shows flashes when he touches the ball.  Can he stay healthy, and can he do the things (special teams, blitz pick up) that will get him more snaps?

Never listen to BB in an interview, that's Pats 101 there. If you want to know what BB thinks of a player it's simple:

    1) Does he start him and if he starts him how long does he stay on the field before getting pulled

    2) How many and what frequency of snaps does BB give him

    3) Is he used consistently from game to game or does he use him only when the matchup warrents it

    4) If he's not a starter or doesn't get consistent reps does he play a key role on ST's

    5) Does he use him in key situations or only at beginning of games where mistakes can be overcome or at the end of games when the outcome is no longer in doubt

If you can honestly answer those questions then you know how BB feels about a player much more so then an interview. Right now Vereen is still behind Ridley and Woodhead and since Bolden can't get back on the field right now that means Vereen is still the last option until he gets more reps then Bolden (once healthy)
