Chump Cherington Off to Great Rebuilding Strategy - Even the Jays Outmaneuver Him

    Cherington is awful......

Going to the Blue Jays: Reyes, Buehrle, Johnson and catcher John Buck. Coming back to the Marlins: shortstop Yunel Escobar, starter Henderson Alvarez and more players to be confirmed.

At least the Red Sox are exploring Jason Bay as an option.   PAAALEASE.

Sox should have cleaned house with this lightweight.  Does anyone know what his plan is??!!!

You really want to take three guys other than Buck who are all making over 15 to 20 mm dollars a year for the next five years??

Ben will have always have his defenders, no matter what.  Meanwhile , the loyal Sox fans will have a second rate ballclub to root for. Even another last place finish will not change some minds. They will say it is a " bridge year ."  A bridge to what ?  Irrelevance ?

Best move Ben was trading Gonzo, Beckett, Punto and Crawford. Second best move he made, not trading for Reyes, Buehrle and Johnson and the over paid Buck. We just got out of a huge finacial mess. I am glad Ben didn't deal for any of those players. Johnson is the one I like the most but I am sure if you wanted him, you would of had to taken some of those other contracts too. No thanks.

YES--Reyes and Buehrle will be around for a few years. Alvarez is a good pitcher but they got rid of one of their headaches in Escobar and Buck is better than Arencibia handling pitchers.

Reyes is good. Buerhle is good, Johnson is good and Buck is good.

Sox don't need to acquire an entire team in one trade.  Case in point...the Marlins had them and couldn't do much better than the Sox did...and now - like the Sox...want to dump them.  Sox don't need to be the Marlin's Dodgers.

If we wanted Reyes and Buerhle, we could've signed them as FAs.  But since FL overpaid for them, we didn't.  No one did.  That's how they wound up with FL.  So why do you want them now?

It's early let's not overreact.  If Ben would traded the propects for this lot of over paid player's most of the poster's on this site would complaining how bad of job Ben did.  Now you want to complain that he did not make this deal.  We need to be patient and wait.  We need to get younger not medcore.

no one said the sox need to make every trade, but the nation is getting frustrated and rightfully so. this team lost 93 last season, and so far we have signed david ross and the blue jays go out and pull off a blockbuster for johnson, reyes, etc and meanwhile the sox continue to be interested in players but nothing happens. now the latest news regarding the sox is that they are looking at jason bay, a 34 yr old outfield who has stunk the last 2 or 3 years with the mets. why the heck would we want him back? we are trying to get younger, not older. we should be looking at justin upton and maybe even giancarlo stanton, not plugs like bay, ross etc. thats why sox fans are getting angry.

Congrats!!! You are now the #1 dumbest post of this offseason...Lets hope you can stay atop.

I belive the Sox did a big trade in August, sorry, but I guess your late for the party.

the blue jays go out and pull off a blockbuster for johnson, reyes, etc and meanwhile the sox continue to be interested in players but nothing happens.

So you like this trade for the BJs?  I think they got skewered on the deal.  I can't beleive that there isn't at least $20M going to the BJs in the deal.

They owe $96M/5 to Reyes who, imho, is not that much better than Escobar.

    They owe $48M/3 to Buerhle

    $6M for Buck

    $14M for JJ

They just spent $55M a year, and I don't think they are that much better than they were.  They should've kept Escobar and Alvarez, and signed Greinke, Hamilton, and Jackson for the same money.

You really like this trade for TO?  IMHO, TO got killed unless, as I mentioned, they get salary relief of $20M or thereabouts.

So you think the Sox should have traded Bradley, Owens, Bretnz and Doubront (plus more!) for one year of Johnson?  And taken on the 5 year $96mill of Reyes and the 3 years $48mill of Buerhle?  And Buck AND Bonafico (who, actually are not so bad comparatively).

And actually, the Sox offer is probably still not as good as the Jays, but those aer our corresponding prospects.  More likely, we get to keep Brentz and give up Barnes or Bogaerts...

Cherington can screw up this winter as he did last winter and most likely will do next winter and his acoyltes will still sing his praises.  The fact is he is totally inept and not big enough for the job he has.  He is beyond pathetic.  That he couldn't have gone to the Marlins and made a bid for maybe Johnson or Reyes speaks volumes just how pathetic this guy is.  In an accompaning articles on Boston.Com there is a list of 14 players the Red Sox say they are interested in.  I say he won't get even one of them.  That's how worthless Cherington is.

Yes, it speaks volumes fred. That hes not willing to part with solid prospects and give up on the future for an oft injured pitcher for 1 year and the bloated contract of the selfish Jose Reyes for 5/95. The same skillset of Crawford, with an injury history making north of 20M. Im glad your not our GM with your constant negative and unrealistic attitude. Ive been respectful, but your just like some on here that are just trying to get under others skin.

My guess is you became a Sox fan during 2004. Am I right?

Reyes is NOT Crawford. Other than speed Reyes has never had an atrocius year OBP wise, doesn't strike out much, played in New York just fine, bats leadoff, switch hitter, is 2 years younger and plays a premium defense at a position where power isn't needed. Crawford is older hated batting leadoff played a defensive position (especially at Fenway) where his speed provided less benefit than his weak arm took and where 20+ home run power is ABSOLUTELY essential. Totally different cases.

Same skillset. meaning speed, not a lot of power. reyes is better, but that wasnt my point. They both have a history of injuries too. You dont pay north of 20M per for guys like reyes and CC. Plain and simple.

Re: Chump Cherington Off to Great Rebuilding Strategy - Even the Jays Outmaneuver Him

At the shortstop position Reyes is not horrible at $20m. You have to remember the new tv deals give every team in baseball an extra $25 million each year nationally. That is in edition to alot of local deals kicking in for teams like Texas and in California Cinci St Louis et al. There is just alot more money out there now. Guys like Nick Swisher who play less costly positions (corner OF, corner IF) per production are looking at AVR deals north of $15m. Swisher may get $100m in his new contract. Value is relative to what the market dictates.

Crawford as a corner outfielder that cant hit leadoff with 0 power is likely worth about what Michael Bourn will get (80-90m 5 years) if the 2 years in Boston had never happened. Bourn would probably hold a little more value since he can play center field and bat leadoff. Reyes plays the second most premium position defensively (next to catcher) and provides top 4 offensive production and top 10 defensive production. That is worth more than Swisher, Crawford or Bourn

Still not worth 20M. That and we have a few SS already in our system. 5 years of an overpriced Reyes would just block them.
