It would be good to see a little stability in the lineup, especially in the leadoff spot. The players need to get in a routine and know where they will be hitting. Ellsbury makes things happen but needs to get on base to do it. Hopefully Crawford will come around soon. The two of them can be a major distraction to a pitcher.

Ellsbury is not excelling at the leadoff slot, but he does lead the team in runs with 16 and is just one behind the team leaders, Youk and Gonzalez, in rbi's, with 14 to their 15.  Overall, a pretty good April for someone who missed all of 2010.

Re: Ellsbury Excelling at Leadoff Position

During the last week, Ellsbury has started to justify Francona’s confidence, putting a halt to the leadoff carousel, at least for now, by notching a pair of three-hit games in the last two against the Orioles. Before Friday night’s game against Seatttle, he had 11 knocks in the last five games, and he scored six runs in that stretch.

“It’s easy to say that because he had three hits last night. That’s what we need,” said Francona Thursday afternoon in a quote that could have come after that night’s game, when Ellsbury had three hits again. “We need him to be on base. When he’s on base, we look like a different team. … With Jacoby’s speed and the way he uses the whole field, he should be able to stay away from those dry spells. He’s so fast, and he has the ability to use the whole field.”

Well, I have to back off that comment about not such a great leadoff guy.  Tonight he's the only guy who looks like he's played the game before.  Leads off with a double and, with Pedroia, Gonzalez, and Youk coming to the plate, he can't even get to third.  Leads off the 1st with a walk, gets erased by Pedroia, but the Sox load the bases only to have Ortiz strike out and Drew fly out to end the inning.

This must be Elles year - it has to be.  I am rooting for him.  I hope he can be the player Ellis Burks was never able to be here in Boston.

Re: Ellsbury Excelling at Leadoff Position

I'm more confident in Ellsbury having a good year than any other player besides Pedroia and Gonzalez. Ellsbury is going to be fine. He's on pace already to hit twice as many HR, twice as many doubles and he's already at over a .340 OBP. And he is currently hot.
