Mariners Designate Jason Bay For Assignment

The Mariners announced that they have designated Jason Bay for assignment.  In a related move, outfielder Mike Morse was activated from his rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Tacoma and activated from the 15-day disabled list.

Bay, 34, appeared in 68 games with Seattle this season, slashing .204/.298/.393 with eleven home runs.  The veteran was signed by Seattle to a non-guaranteed deal back in December.  Seattle now has ten days to trade, release, or outright the contract of Bay to the minors.

The Mariners took a low-risk gamble on Bay this offseason in the hopes he could be a useful bench bat following three injury-plagued seasons with the Mets.  For his career, Bay owns a .266/.360/.481 slash line across eleven seasons with the Pirates, Red Sox, Mets, and Mariners.

    Probably wrong on both counts.

Vic's power has mostly not fluctuated much at all, topping out at 18.  Not much of a candidate for PEDs.

If Ells was going to use PEDs, why wouldn't he use them in his contract year?

Its a good time for all those FO bashers to put their hands up, and acknowledge Theo and his cohorts got it right, by not signing Bay to a contract extension.

Just because a guy looks skinny doesn't mean he didn't use performance enhancing drugs. A lot of the suspended players didn't have the bulked up appearance we normally associate with steroid use. Maybe Bay was on something, maybe he wasn't, we'll never really know. I just find his cataclysmic drop in production to be quite suspicious. It's well beyond the normal age regression. Players don't usually lose their skills overnight.

Did you forget about Manny's behaviour prior to the trade that necessitated his move?

Ramirez misbehaved several times during his tenure with the Red Sox and they still won two World Series Championships with him. It would have been a third ring in 2008 had the Red Sox not traded him for Bay.

Could this be the righthanded bat off the bench the Sox need?  Am I right?

If at first you don't succeed, try and tick everyone else off.  If that doesn't work, blame it on the dog.

    Re: Jason Bay designated

Just for fun, I overlayed Bay's spray charts at Safeco vs Fenway.   He would have had three more HRs to left field, and one taken away in the triangle (though that would have been at least a double).  It looks like 3-4 more could have hit the wall.

If you changed 2 outs to HRs and 3 to 2Bs, his stats would be about .233 / .325 / .456 with a .781 OPS.  If you projected those 13 HRs in 236 PAs over the 638 he had in 2009, that's 35 HRs on the year.
