His 2012 Fangraphs WAR was $8.9m. Apparently a "good guy".....certainly an extreme pull hitter (from the right, rather a positive in Fenway dontcha think?). In 333 2012 PAs he went 18/47/.262. He slaughters lefties, but struggles against righties. THAT'S WHY HE'S ONLY PAID $5M/YEAR! If he hit righties the way he hits lefties he's be paid $20m+/year.
He's a nice platoon guy, relatively cheap if he maintains his recent level for a whopping 2 more years.....another non-issue....
Oh, make no mistake, it is an issue Sonics. How many here have expressed displeasure with the Gomes signing: overpaid platoon player, scrap heap, etc.
Gomes, in many ways, is THE issue. The essence of the much-maligned off-season approach of not throwing the vault at Hamilton/Grienke/et al and filling the club with gritty platoon gamers instead. How many have railed at this, at Gomes, as somehow fleecing the fanbase?
Space, what most drives me crazy is when some assume baseball executives are bereft of strategy, or wits, when they do what they do. One might disagree with said strategy, or the underlying tactics....or rail against the contemporary economics of baseball...but most of the Sox' "controversial" moves since 2002 are blindingly, obviously, strategically consistent.
Do we have to again rehash how the Sox ended up with Ellsbury, Buchholz, Lowrie, Bard, Brentz, Ranaudo, Barnes, Swihart, Owens, Bradley, etc?
Or the brilliant manipulation of the system that meant Bill Hall reduced the Sox' CBT?
Or the gigantic value of AGon in 2011 ($28m Fangraphs value for $5.5m salary) then when fully priced was used to swindle the Dodgers?
I'm not saying this sort of stuff should be valued....but it's the reality....so rage, rage against the dying of the light and look at JBJ's BA......
