It's just a few games.  A few games don't represent a trend.  If he went 0 for 9 in the middle of july no one would even notice.

Agreed that 0-9 isn't a big deal, but it's worth noting that Montero went through something similar last year.

Yes, but Montero was also consistently a year ahead of Lava.

As much as Lava isn't hitting through his first 16 AB's, he still has a .333 OBP fueled by 5 walks (and 2 K's) in 5 games.  It's certainly a good sign that he's demonstrating good plate discipline.

Meanwhile, Monero hasn't drawn a walk yet this year (albeit at the MLB level).

Montero is off to a bit of a slow start himself as he is hitting .278 at the MLB level.  It's early for both players.

Somehow Montero's OBP is lower than his AVG.  How does that happen?

Yep, he has 1 SF on the year, so he has 18 AB's, but 19 PA's.  Because he hasn't drawn a walk yet his OBP is actually lower than his avg.  Something tells me this is going to change fairly quickly.

He seemed like a guy who had something to prove, a young guy that would spark the life into the clubhouse. Maybe if we dumped McDonald, not sure why we even needed Shoppach or move one of our completely useless relievers this kid could come off the bench and make spot starts. Why haven't we moved forward from last year? It's the same ol' team!

Montero might have been (and still is) ahead of Lavarnway but is 2 years younger than Lavarnway.

Second point is as long as I have been following Montero and that is since he came into the Yankee organization, he has been a slow starter every season at every level. Then he goes on a tear as the season progresses.

I put my money on that this conversation dies a slow death as the season moves along.

           You're comparing apples to oranges.

           Lavarnway is a catcher.

Montero if he sticks is a DH.

Why do you think the yanks showed him the door?

Lavarnway has been hitting the ball well with few results. A HR ball called back as it was slightly foul. A couple of other 375 ft shots which were caught. He will be fine. 2 hits yesterday. He is fine.

That is of course true.  I take some comfort in the fact that Lava is being groomed to catch, while the Mariners seem to have given up on that with Montero.  It will be interesting to see what happens if/when Olivo misses time, maybe they give him a shot behind the plate?  Lava got a late start working behind the plate, and if it were only about his bat, he'd be on the roster right now.  Of course, DH is blocked by Papi and 1B by AGon so there's really no spot for him on the 25 man roster other than catcher.  It's incredibly frustrating when our backup all defense catcher can't even catch pitches hitting him in his glove.

If you're gonna keep Lava down to work on his defense, you'd better have good defensive options on the MLB team.  The Sox don't have any,
