Noting against Lowell, but comparing him to Papi is a little foolish.
Yes, Lowell said and did everything right. But let's not pretend Papi is out there robbing old ladies and setting orphanges on fire. He wants a contract to play baseball. Do we need endless news stories and multiple threads villifying him at every turn?
This has already gotten WAY more coverage than it deserves, and the sad little comparisons don't make it any better. OK, so Lowell signed quieter. Therefore we should turn on Papi? Well, Tim Wakefield gave the Sox a far, far better contract than Lowell did in terms of money, years and control, and did not allow it to go all the way to free agency before he signed. Why couldn't Lowell be more like Wakefield?
I think you are a little sensitive. This is a good thread about a great guy and much needed in a sea of ortiz comments. Lowell was like Tim in the sense that they did not bring all the cameras to them about contracts. They both waited until the season was over to discuss business.
How about we go even deeper in to the Mike contracts. Mike was not one of theo's boys, he was signed by Ben. I got the impression that season that theo had no intention of signing Mike after 07. Mike goes out and get the ws mvp and now theo is in a situation. Philly puts a massive offer on the table and not one comment by Mike that the sox should match it.
Mike played hurt and we all saw the pain he was in. We don't need to compare Lowell to anyone, he set the bar high enough thru his character and as a player, that others can be compared to him.
Not sensitive at all about Mikey. He was wonderful.
What is not needed is putting Ortiz down.
Shut the heck up about how we are "so offended" about a person who has been different than what we wish.
Papi has played here after 2006 for an incredible $13 to 14 million (rough figures) a season when players of the same value were playing for $10+ million a season more. OF FREE AGENT CONTRACTS YOU FOOL!
If Ortiz wanted to be a FA, he could. In fact, recently he was. You know, before 2013, when he had a blown out achilles, and the Sox inexplicably gave him 2 YEARS. Why? Because he was 'big papi'. That wasn't enough though...so one more...on top of one more, which was on top of one more, which originated with one more. Also...remind me how much attention he got from other teams please?
Some people will forever excuse anything he says because of what he's done. That's fine. That's their prerogative. I choose to hold people to a HIGHER standard. The timing is never accidental, always just before spring training, soon after the season, and a mid-point during the offseason, usually from the DR.
I didn't take anything personally, by the way. I was just pointing out the hilarious hypocrisy in what you wrote. You said it was ok for Ortiz to have an opinion, as he lives in a free country while then denouncing my opinion.
I tried my hardest to keep this about Lowell only, I wasnt' the driving force turning this into anti-Ortiz. In fact, it was people feeling the need to overly defend Ortiz before anyone really had much to say about him.
Now, who's sensitive exactly? Ortiz certainly is, and has proven extremely thin-skinned MANY times in the past. His ardent supporters seems to have that same quality.
