It was a different era; Maris's  61st HR was seen by a small crowd too; despite the press coverage.

I can't say that this is the most 'stirring' performance in sports... but I was checking around on one of our old top prospects who was on top prospect lists for years... Dernell Stenson.  I didn't realize that he was brutally murdered at 25 years old after he finally got a chance at the majors.

Here is how he ranked with BA's top 100 prospect lists

    2001 77 Dernell Stenson 1b/of Red Sox

    2000 66 Dernell Stenson 1b Red Sox

1999 22 Dernell Stenson of Red Sox

While playing with the Scottsdale Scorpions of the AFL, Stenson was murdered, for reasons that are still unclear. The AFL suspended play for two days after Stenson's murder. In 2004, the league inaugurated the Dernell Stenson Sportsmanship Award, given to a player who displays the values of perseverance and humility.

    Death investigation

The incident initially appeared to be a carjacking; Stenson was bound, s-hot in the head and chest, and then run over with his own SUV. Information which surfaced following the murder indicated that it may have been the culmination of a more elaborate scheme.

Stenson had received threatening text messages from former girlfriend, Jennifer Gaddis, including one that said "U better pray I never see you U again. I swear Dernell U R worth a Murder charge 4 & that is all U R worth." She had engaged in odd behavior before, having faked both a pregnancy and a suicide in order to attract Stenson's attention.

Gotta give a vote to the national anthem at TD Garden after the marathon bombing.
