    Napoli has AVN

Career threatening? Absolutely. Hip replacements are frequently needed:

Mike Napoli was officially introduced on a conference call moments ago. He agreed to a one-year deal for $5 million with an incentive package of $8 million more if he stays healthy based on plate appearances.

Ben Cherington and Napoli's agent, Brian Grieper, were also on the conference.

The mystery of Napoli's hip condition was cleared up. He has avascular necrosis (AVN), a disease that causes bone deterioration due to an interruption of the blood supply.

Sorry to hear that, but he needs to file for disability with the MLBPA. He does not need to be on the 5 million guaratneed Red Sox payroll. That said, I hope he does decent in what should be a platoon type of role for 2013.

He could be assymptomatic for years, with proper treatment. Its not good though...he is young to have this sort of problem. I have no problem with a one year contract for him. He will probably be fine, or mostly fine, for a year anyway.

My father had this; the reason? He was taking a high dosage steroid over a few yrs to treat a muscle disease ... ARod had a similar condition .. so did Lowell .. hint hint

Read about it today. It was what ended Bo Jackson's career, but Bret Farve played with and through it. Playing first base, as opposed to catching, should help. Only time will tell.

There are lots of causes of this condition. I would not assume its from steroid use unless there is other evidence.

Not that you can put too much stock in it, but the Dr. who did ARods surgery said his condition was genetic, not from steroids.

For his health, Napoli should retire from MLB and only follow the orders of a competent medical team specialists. There are 5 million reasons why he won't be retiring.

Thats a good point. I am pretty sure the repeated trauma pro ball players endure is not going to do his hip much good over time.

If I recall...Bo Jackson got it from a Severe hit on the Hip while playing in Oakland......As A Catcher I am sure Mike N has had many home plate collisions which could have began the cause of such an injury.....wouldnt go the Roids route without some evidence

I always blamed the injury on his insistence on playing two sports.  FB is hard enough to play even when you have 3-4 months to recuperate.  I also don't know, as good an athlete as he was, if he was in true FB condition.

He was the best running back I ever saw, from a pure running perspective.  In his four seasons, he started 5, 9, 9, and -0- games, yet had the longest run from scrimmage in three of those years with 91, 92, and 88 yards, and a 5.4 yards per run.  I'd love to have seen what he could've done with a reall off-season and 16 starts.

And you believe that? Was Arod a steroid user?
