hard to judge against the inept padres, their only major league hitters were hudson and ludwick and they got good swings.  however, he deserves at least a couple of starts, mid 90's with a sweet curve, and changeup he wasn't afraid to throw when behind in the count

I liked what I saw out of him as a starter and I want the chance to see more of him in the rotation.5.2 IP on just 89 pitches, without the kiddie gloves, he would have gone 7 last night.  He really only made 2 mistakes all night (the HR and the double to Rizzo).

Re: SHOULD MILLER START, PEN, OR BOTH.......

I think he should get at least a couple more shots to start before the ASB.  If he is very good, he's the new #5 (or #4).  If he's okay, I feel like the Miller/Wake/Aceves monster should become our 5th starter ... actually 5th + part-time 6th.  All three deserve some starting time and using all of them will keep Wake durable for the rest of the season plus give Tito the option of getting the other starters rest when prudent.

Plus I don't know how well Miller and his control problems would adjust to working out of the pen.  Seems like he would respond better to a fixed schedule.  Anyone have thoughts on that?

Re: SHOULD MILLER START, PEN, OR BOTH.......

The idea of having bard and miller as setups to papelbon is ridiculous, but nonetheless, if he can start, he should.
Also, you have to look at what he brings as both a starter and a reliever.
when buch is back, it will most likely be a fight between wakefield and miller for the fifth spot in the rotation. Although control could be an issue, miller is very versatile in the pen. He can be a specialist, long relief, or setup. Wakefield can truly only be a long reliever, and not a good one at that. If this versatility in the bullpen outweighs his starting abilities compared to wakefields, although it might not be best for him, the best thing for the team could potentially be miller as a reliever.

If he'd have gone 7 he wouldn't have looked as good. Part of the reason he made those mistakes was that he was tiring. His velocity had dipped a bit and his control wasn't as precise.

To get the most out of Miller, IMO, I think it would be best for him to remain as a starter..I think things will work themselves out..

And that's the reason that they were treating him with the kiddy gloves.  I'm not saying he should have been left it, only that once he gets used to pitching at the MLB level again, he won't have a problem throwing 110 pitches, which would have been enough to go 7 innings last night.

Put him in the pen.  They need bullpen help more than starting pitching.

I think he should do both...start the game, go let's say 5 or so innings, then take a trip out to the bullpen and come in in relief of himself.

Re: SHOULD MILLER START, PEN, OR BOTH.......

My take is that he should be used as a starter, especially if his control is something of an issue. You just can't have somebody coming out of the pen late in close games and walking people. This is even more of an issue as our catchers don't often throw base-stealers out. If a pitcher loses control early and gives up a few runs, as a result, you can still get back in the game. If you does this late in the game you're screwed.
