Sox get four selections to All-Star team

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff

Sox centerfielder Jacoby Ellsbury and starting pitcher Josh Beckett were named All-Stars by the players vote joining David Ortiz and Adrian Gonzalez, elected by the fans for the AL All-Star team.

Jon Lester, Jonathan Papelbon and Daniel Bard did not make it. Lester shouldn't feel too bad. CC Sabathia wasn't elected either.

Other Sox snubs were second baseman Dustin Pedroia and third baseman Kevin Youkilis.

David Ortiz, who is captain of the Home Run Derby for the American league, has chosen Adrian Gonzalez and Jose Bautista to be on the team.

Ortiz said he has also invited Mark Teixeira, but is awaiting word from the Yankee slugger pending his selection to the All-Star team.

Ortiz also said he has asked Robinson Cano to take Teixeira's place if he can't do it, and also has Josh Hamilton as a backup plan.

Its great to see some of our players make it but Russel Martin is hitting 223 and Polanco?  Where does the "Title" All Star fit?

Sabathia is the most glaring omission.   No Teixeira either, but Russell Martin is in.  It balances out.

Jeter as usual has no business being there unless he has a ticket, Asdrubal Cabrera should be the starter

The most obvious snub that I see is Paul Konerko. He's an MVP candidate.

CC isn't on the team because he's due to pitch the Sunday before the game, which is fine, since the big guy get some time off.

.223 hitting Russell Martin on team just goes to show you what a joke the All-Star team is, except then he must be there for defensive reasons? Or are the catchers that bad out there, offensively?

Konerko has been great, but not better than Cabrera or Gonzalez, so I don't think it's a snub.

The catching situation is pretty bad, but Victor Martinez or Carlos Santana would have been more deserving.

Martin was voted in by the players.  Like they did with Varitek a couple of years ago, I am sure they consider the defensive part of the the game, especially at catcher.

Jasons resurgence or even Salty would be more deserving than Martin.  Being voted to the All Star team is an honor and huge accomplishment in ones career.  The judging should be a little more deserving.

Martins BA is an eye-opener, and I'm sure there had to be somebody more deserving. However, Santana is hitting .230, VMart is primarily a DH, and those 2 couldn't match Martin defensively if Martin had a case of beer. Since the backups are a player vote, that should tell you something right there. Plus, Martin's got a bunch of HRs and RBIs to boot, FWIW.

How homerish can we get? Jason's a backup catcher. You've got to be kidding me. Salty is a 4A player until proven otherwise, although he's made strides lately.

Yeah, but Santana has a .780 OPS, and he plays nearly every day.  Martinez would have made more sense in the game, but I can see it would be tough to vote him in as a Catcher.

I'm OK with it.  He's certainly not what you think of when you say 'All Star', but given the other options, not the worst choice.

What do you think of omitting Teixeira?  Just a case of too many good 1Bs, or was he hurt by having too many Yankees on the roster?

The problem with 1B is that there are usually 3 or 4 deserving candidate. I have no issue with Tex not going. Besides, his batting average is pedestrian at best.

I don't know the details of the player votes - I guess they had to vote for a DH as well, which is why we see Michael Young in a spot that could have gone to Teixeira or more Konerko.

So you looked at your Martins numbers and really believe this was a home town post?  Your back up catcher Cervelli is better than Martin, as ours is Jason and Salty.

Without a doubt. What are you going by, BA? Ever check other stats, like OPS, where Martin's is 200 points higher? The fact that he has 10 HRS, and 34 RBIs? How naive. Finally, the PLAYERS voted him in; those who understand defense, situational play, playing hurt (like he has) and other nuances; they don't play rotisserie baseball.
