STOP the PRESSES! Pitching is ONLY 25% of the game...

An actual Professor has determined that Pitching, and it's portion of success is only 25%.
This October, the Journal of Quantitative Analysis in Sports will feature the article: An Estimate of How Hitting, Pitching, Fielding, and Base-stealing Impact Team Winning Percentages in Baseball. In it, University of Delaware Professor Charles (Charlie) Pavitt defines the perfect "formula" for MLB teams to use to build the ultimate winning team.

This professor surely must have known Earl Weaver and his 3 Run Homer.

YOuk, that is why the market dictates where value upgrades are. This year, it is through trade for improved offensive balance. Red Sox standard deviation was not great offense by an stretch.

Yes 10 run explosions followed by a string of -6 run games while the staff routinely gave up an equal amount of runs.

I wonder if he is comparing regular season to post season. I would argue that hitting can get you to the play-offs, but its pitching that wins it. Just look at the world series winners over the past ten years. 00 yankees pitching (Clemens, Petite, Wells, O Hernandez), 01 Diamond backs pitching (Shilling, Johnson), 02 Angels (Ramon Ortiz, Washburn, Sele, Lackey)pitching, 03 Marlins pitching (Beckett, Penny, Willis, Pavan) 04 Redsox pitching, (Shilling, Pedro, Lowe), 05 White sox pitching (Burlhe, Garland, Garcia, Contrares), 06 Cardinals hitting, 07 Redsox pitching (Beckett, Shilling, Matzusaka, Lester) 08 Phillies pitching and offense (Hamels, Myers, Moyer) 09 Yankees pitching (cc, burnett, petite)10 Giants pitching, 11 Cardinals pitching and offense. Seems to me that pitching is pretty big especially when it counts.

09 Yankees pitching (cc, burnett, petite

09 Yankees was an example of how 1 strong starter and one of the best top to bottom offensive lineups in MLB history can win a title. AJ was not impressive in 09, just looked like it because of 10 and 11. Petite was old and marginal in 2009. Both were carried by 09 Yankee offense!

Spot on.  It seems that when it counts most, good pitching usually trumps good hitting.

Sounds to me like that professor never played the game if he thinks pitching is only 25% of the game. Need to look no farther than RS September swoon as a cause and effect.

if that stat is correct, or close to it there is still another element to consider.  More players contribute to the offense in a game than do to pitching.  So on any given day 9-10 players control the outcome of a game offensively while 2-3 or 4  contribute to the pitching...and one of those guys likely goes 6-7 or sometimes even 8-9 innings.  So 1 player has a significant impact.

Anyway you want to look at it........pitching is vital.

Well hank in the 2009 playoffs, petite pitched very well and burnett could have been worse. Fact is the yanks had a great line up from 2001-2008, and yet they dont win a world series until they get the pitching.

The professor may be right or wrong but why the need to quantify the question? Who cares? Is it important to me to determine the best maneuver in tennis to be a forehand, a backhand, volleying, rushing the net, or the serve? In a football game, should we debate whether defense is 60% of the game or is it offense, kicking, or specialty teams?

    "Baseball is about:
    • 42 percent hitting,
    • 8 percent baserunning,
    • 37 percent pitching and
    • 13 percent fielding."
