    Aviles or Iglesias for SS.

Oswalt is the primary target.  I doubt Jackson is on the radar.

They should also add Cody Ross.

If Ortiz wins arb and is cut for any number of reasons on one of the drop dead dates--

Don't count out Youk going to the Cubs or to the A's--Beane still loves the "Greek God of Walks"

Youk or Lav becomes the DH
Aviles plays left with CC out
    Iggy plays SS and
Punto plays 3 b Opening Day
    Sweeney in RF

    The other moves:
Jenks goes to the Cubs and the Sox get Byrd.
The Sox trade for Gavin Floyd or they trade with the Braves for JJ and Prado.

    Sorry that's more than three...

    Let's play baseball!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, what a lineup MadMc has left behind with all this:

CF Ellsbury - he'll be gone soon too I'm sure
    2B Pedroia
    1B Gonzalez
3B Punto - A Utility player now full time at 3B
LF Aviles - another Utility player now in LF until Crawford returns
C  Saltalamacchia - the jury is still out on him
    RF Byrd/Sweeney - How many question marks, I'll say 5 ??????
SS Iglesias - banjo hitter who may not reach the Mendoza line, but he'll look good fielding
DH Lavarnway - another player that the jury is still out on.

All this to add Oswalt or Jackson and then give up the farm for Floyd??

Holy Crap -- it's let's hope the first 3 hitters can average 3 runs every 2 at bats, because that's about all they'll get with this lineup!!

I am amazed how many 'so-called' Red Sox fans just want to burn the team to the ground in their efforts to try to improve, but more appropriately, demolish it?

Whether they sign Oswalt or trade for Floyd,Garza or Rodriguez it really doesn't matter,Iggy is a better SS. At least Ben has been thinking of ways to better the team. Scrubby was a defensive liability and a plus offensive player.

Sox FO must have a plan in the works after getting rid of Scut or they would not have created another hole to be plugged.  The team with the 2nd highest payroll in MLB is not going through a fire sale nor are they rolling over and playing dead.

I don't see it as a hole. SS was one of our weakest links, especially defensively, and it happened to be the position with the best back-up(s) next to maybe DH/C (Lava).

We needed to clear some salary space, like it or not. Scutty's $6M made dealing him the most logical choice. Even if you view it as opening up a new hole, the the filling in of the larger hole with pitching with the $6M saved will more than outweigh the possible step down to Iggy/Aviles/Punto.

    What's a bigger hole?

    Silva/Cook/Padilla as our 5th starter
    or
    Iggy/Aviles/Punto as our SSs

Or look at it this way...

    What's the greater differential?

    Scutty vs Iggy/Aviles/Punto
    or
    Oswalt vs Silva/Cook/Padilla

I think we can count those moves out.

Beane dealt Trevor CAhill and Gio Gonzalez this off-season because they were both aritration-eligible for the first time.  If those two are out of his price range, the chances of him still being interested in a 32yo oft-injured corner infielder who makes more than double those two pitchers is not very likely.  Don't put much faith in the moneyball book anymore; that book was 10 years ago, and most of the players involved have long since retired.  Beane has moved on with his targets, too.

Also, the Cubs are rebuilding, which means they won't want Youkilis or Jenks.  And Jenks for Byrd saves them like $500,000, and for a guy on the DL who can't even help them today.  Yippy. They'll hold Byrd until July if they can't find someone who will give them a minor leaguer or two for him before then.  If Jenks was helthy, the Cubs might be interested, because more teams in July will be looking for bullpen arms than for outfielders...
