If the Rays are so good and their manager is so much better than Francona, why aren't they in 2nd place battling the Yankees like the Sox are doing?

The Rays will not catch the Sox. There is a little too much panic going here. The Sox will be just fine and will be in the playoffs at the end of this season. Enough with all the negativity.

Lets revisit it at the end of the month.

You seriously think the Rays are going to catch the Red Sox?  If the Red Sox go 10 and 12 over the rest of the season Tampa Bay would have to go 17 and 5 to tie.  If the Red Sox go 12 and 10 that would mean Tampa Bay would have to go 19 and 3.

    Are you joking?

Re: why rays will catch sox

ONE OF THE FACTORS THAT WILL HURT THE RAYS IS THAT THEY
HAVE TO PLAY THE YANKEES ABOUT 6 MORE TIMES. WITH ABOUT
30 GAMES LEFT TO GO [ GIVE OR TAKE A FEW ], THAT WILL BE
AN IMPORTANT ISSUE. TRUE...IF THE YANKS HAVE A 7 GAME
LEAD GOING INTO THE LAST WEEK OR SO, THEN THEY MIGHT
NOT PLAY THEIR REGULARS AS MUCH ...BUT THAT IS JUST
CONJECTURE. BUT YES...THE RAYS DO HAVE A CHANCE TO
CATCH THE RED SOX. THE SOX HAVE A DEPLETED PITCHING
STAFF, AND THE HITTERS THEY DEPENDED UPON AT THE
SEASON'S BEGINNING , ARE NOT PRODUCING. RIGHT NOW,
ONLY PEDEY, PAPI, AGON AND ELLSBURY ARE PRODUCING
WITH SOME HELP FROM SALTY. YOUKILIS HAS NOT BEEN A
FACTOR,DOWN THE STRETCH, AND DON'T LOOK FOR TOO MUCH
GOING FORWARD. THE SOX REFUSE TO PLAY THEIR YOUNG-
STERS, IF THEY TRULY HAVE ANY AND DEPEND TOO MUCH
ON VETS LIKE VARITEK AND WAKEFIELD, WHEN THEY SHOULD
HAVE NURTURED YOUNG PITCHING AND CATCHING IN THE
MINORS. DOUBRONT IS OBVIOUSLY A DISAPPOINTMENT,
AND BOWDEN HAS ONLY BEEN GIVEN LIMITED CHANCES. WE
NEVER SHOULD HAVE SIGNED LACKEY AND CRAWFORD. IT WAS
MONEY POORLY SPENT....ABOUT $150 MILLION WORTH. THAT
COULD HAVE BEEN SPENT IN ROOKIE DEVELOPMENT OR IN
THE TRADE MARKET. BUT THEO EPSTEIN USED BAD JUDGMENT
IN AN EFFORT TO MATCH THE YANKS "GET" OF GRANDERSON
AND TEIXEIRA. HE FAILED MISERABLY. IF WE FAIL TO GET A
WILD CARD, [ OR EVEN IF WE ARE LUCKY AND DO GET IT],
THIS SEASON HAS BEEN A FAILURE. YOUKILIS, VARITEK, AND
WAKEFIELD NEED TO GO, ALONG WITH SCUTARO, MCDONALD,
LOWRIE, AVILES, AND THE REST OF THE STIFFS THEO PUT ON
THIS TEAM. NONE OF THE POLLYANNA FANS CAN DENY THIS.

The train has already left the station. This team is playing like there in the
celler!. 11 innings with TORONTO & they can't score ONE (1) RUN!!!   Are you
kidding me!!! PATHETIC. I'm sick & tired of these denyers not facing realty.
NO pitching, no heart, no enthusiasm & desire to win!-All a reflection of
Francoma. That is why he is NOT considered a great mgr. You motivate
people and create excitement-all lacking now. Stay with Francoma & things
will NEVER change. The only way they can win is if they had 9 TED WILLIAMS
    on the team!  LouV

Is this the same topic we all saw about three weeks ago that the Rays are suddenly catching up the Yankees or Boston?  Suddenly four days later, Rays fell backward to like 9 games behind.

    Quit bringing this up!!

Sox are a far better team through and through than the Rays.  But they've picked the worst possible time to s*ck.

There are seven games left against the Rays.  Overall record in MLB is far less telling than seeing a team get hot down the stretch.  That's pretty much why we won 2 WS these past eight years.  Get to the postseason and it really doesn't matter if you won 100 games, or 80 games.  The team that has the momentum goes deep in the postseason.

So here's hoping for a momentum shift in the AL east soon.

The Rays are the classic spoiler team, they're currently playing the Rangers tough which allows the Angels a chance to to close the gap in the west. Starting this Friday they have 13 scheduled games against the Sox and Yanks and if they dominate one series or the other they'll play themsleves back into the race, but likely fall short...what they will have a say in, is who wins the division.

Actually, I think this is a pretty good time to s*ck.  This team has been prone to offensive slumps, but they do not last long.  Certainly not a month.  I prefer s*cking now, getting it out of the way, and start firing on all cylinders by the end of the month, and on into the playoffs.

If you want to run with the big dog's you can't pizz like a puppy...

Tampa's inablity to compete over the long hual is a byproduct of playing in the same division with the New York Yankees, they of the 225M dollar payroll and The Red Sox under John Henry chose to increase their payroll in an effort to compete with the Yank's...The Phillies use the same model in the NL all three use their resources to their competitive advantage trying to build championship rosters by all means nessasary each year.

Tampa would be a perennial power in any of the other 4 divisions in the AL East they have to take advantage of the years where their rosters are capable of winning 95 games...this is not one of those years, but they'll be right there again next...

    Just for the record...

The Rays aren't the best small ball team in the AL, infact they're 3rd in total stolen bases, 11th in steal pct...In terms of sacrificing or moving runners, they're middle of the pack in sacrifice hits 8th and 13th out of 14 teams in sacrifice fly's....So they infact are not leaders in any of these categories in fact they are below the median average in all three categories in the AL, save for total stolen bases...They do lead the league in the fewest errors but are tied with the Red and White Sox for fielding pct by a team...
