He wont play 3B after Middlebrook is hitting hot lately.   I think Farrell rather to play Drew at SS tonite no matter the pitcher is a lefty cuz he is afraid Bogaret would have some butterfly feeling playing defensively and offensively.   Remember Farrell need to win tonite to order to set the tempo for the series.

Considering Left Handed batters are hitting .191 this year. I'd start Bogaerts, Middlebrooks, Ross, And Napoli.

Righthanded batters are hitting .262 against him.

Always can PH for any of them if Showalter changes over to a righty. This guy Chen Pitches tough against us.

But I think Farrell is using Drew at SS to play defense.  Never know that Bogaret have the nervous feeling playing at SS and could have few costly errors!!

So what I am saying Farrell rather to think defense tonite more than the bat!!

But Ross, Iggy (who went 0-3 against Chen), and struggling Middlebrook batted against him.  Still the Sox won 3-1.

So if Ross played in that game, I do not see anything wrong with Drew playing in that game too.

Line up will be Ellsbury, Victorino, Pedy, Papi, Gomes or Napoli, Drew, Middlebrook, Gomes or Napoli, and Salty

Re: With lefty Chen on the mound tonight,

The change of lineup is a Maddon idea. JF gets to the field and posts a random all RH lineup against Chen. It doesn't have to have logic it's just we have RH sticks --the O's have had our number let's try something a little different.

We are playing with house money--KC beat the Rays yesterday---Toronto beat the Yankees. What's the big deal---Ortiz is still nursing the back. Ells hasn't had a gameday day off in a while. It would be good to give Victorino a shot in CF--it's been a while. Drew could use another day off vs a lefty. Salty could use an end of August day off from catching.

    Frankly why not???

Agree. I think you have to play Napoli because he had a couple of good games and you have to see if he is coming out of his long slump. Sitting on the bench won't help him right now, and if he can get hot he can carry the team.

Chen always strong against the Red Sox.  Only allowed 1 HR in his 4 career starts against Boston.  24+ IP and under 3 ERA.  We need to have as many righties as we can against lefty giving us hard times.  Make him uncomfortable with every batters, make him pitch outside, wait for your pitch, drive up his pitch count.  With lefty batters in between, Chen can have his own game plan.

Agree "sean", but IMO Farrell will still go with Ells, Papi and Drew for sure, as Francona would do.  It's full speed ahead (left handed batters) and be damed of the torpedeos (lefty Chen).

I also agree that we can't only have righties but Papi, with back soreness, and Drew, weakness against lefties, could be reserved.

it would be dumb not to start bogaerts against chen tonight, drew is terrible against lefties and bogaerts is coming off his best game to date, he should be starting tonight. i dont think the world is going to end if drew sits 2 games in a row. he's hitting .247 with 101 k's in 98 games this year, .198 against lefties. sit him. enough said

Why people think bats is more important than defense????   Farrell isnt going to put a rookie guy at SS in his first home game of his lifetime.  What if he make two errors and only went 1 for 4, and it is possible that they could lose that game.

Seriously, Farrell will put an experience SS, Drew in the game!!  It is not a dumb move.  IT is more of a wise move especially Boston is trying to win the divisional title!!

What if Boggy makes no error and goes 3 for 4 with 3 run HR?  That's a possibility too.  You sound like Boggy is prone to making errors.  They are major league players and Boggy is a SS by trade.  And Middlebrooks made his first major league game debut at home.  So did Iggy and Nava.

seriously, you want the Red Sox to gamble and try a new experience tonite at the same time Boston is fighting themselves to push Tampa Rays among others away from the divisional title lead??

Come on, Bogaret can wait another day or two.  Boston need to win this series against the Orioles to set the tempo between these two teams!!

Remember most rookies were called up like Machado, their teams were already out of the playoff.  That is easy for them to do on what they need to do for these rookies.  Boston are in the post season penant race, and that is a different.!!

Re: With lefty Chen on the mound tonight,

    By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff

A few Red Sox thoughts after a fun week of watching baseball in California:

    • If the Sox are to win the American League East for the first time since 2007, they're going to have to find a way to play better against the Baltimore Orioles.

The Sox have a winning record against the Rays (10-6), Blue Jays (9-7), and Yankees (7-5) but are 4-6 against the Orioles with a whopping nine games to play starting tonight. That's nearly a third of the games they have left.

Baltimore is 27-19 against the Sox the last three seasons.

Red Sox pitchers have a 3.39 earned run average against the Orioles this year. But Red Sox hitters are a paltry .208/.270/.367 against Baltimore. Jacoby Ellsbury, Shane Victorino, and Dustin Pedroia are 22 of 114 (.193).

    • Jonny Gomes is hitting .234/.342/.426 on the season. But he is at .364/.474/.564 with runners in scoring position, .750/.429/1.500 with the bases loaded, and .409/567/.636 with two outs and runners in scoring position.

    pete is darn right...
