    Youk 2011: what's happened/ing?

I love the guy, and his 2011 batting is still elite for a 3B.  But his production is far below his past three (elite 1B) seasons and he is 32+ now.  Among the Fab Five he seems to be the only one (relatively) underperforming.

Nagging injuries?  Age-related?  Statistical aberration?  The move to 3B?  Or small sample as he's still OPSing nearly .900?

He has been playing hurt, but that has not prevented him from knocking in 76 runs so far, which means he could match his best year ever of 115.  Plus his OPS of .878 is just a tad below his career .900.

ya youk is really struggling this year and maybe its time to switch him and papi in the batting order. Youks level of production is not good enough to be in the 4 spot.

    Re: Youk 2011: what's happened/ing?

Youkilis only has 370 ABs, so the difference between him and the past 3 or so seasons is about 11 fewer hits at this pace.

For Youkilis, sure, its not .300/400/.550 (yet), but I'd hardly call it a bad season in need of explanation...

    Another anti-semitic hammer from monk.

Youk's doing fine, coming off an injury. But he's not supposed to be a star slugging RH bat. The Red Sox don't have one.

Softy - I defy you to show a single bigoted post I have ever made.  Making bogus claims against others is a pathetic attempt to whitewash (pun intended) your own history.

tcal - I loved Willie Mays as a kid, but by 1973 he was clearly unable to play MLB anymore.  I am not claiming Youk is done, but love shouldn't be blind.

Max - True, but his OPS this year is far off his three most recent - and therefore relevant - seasons.  And I mentioned "hurt" as a possible explanation.

Notin - I wouldn't - and didn't - call it a bad season (I called it "elite for a 3B").  But it is clearly down on the past 3 seasons when the rest of the Fab Five are feeding off each other to have great seasons.  And I did mention "small sample" as a possible explanation.

    Re: Youk 2011: what's happened/ing?

fangraphs rates Youk as the second best--offense and defense combined--thirdbaseman in MLB.  His season stats are right on par with Adrian Beltre although Youk's OPS is 50 or 60 points higher.

Youk found a home at first base, where he won a gold glove and came in 3d in AL MVP voting in 2008, but he got moved to 3B to make room for AGon and is giving it his absolute best shot, despite nagging injuries.

And the OP has decided to grade his dives and found him wanting.  Baloney.  Youk is one of the reasons the AGon acquisition has worked so well.

Youk is A-OK. The guy who needs to learn is Gonzalez. Exciting hitter, but in the clutch, like last night, he fails. He is also only a fair first baseman, especially when compared to Youk. He does not, as yet , have the RED Sox passion.

He's only the MVP; and one of the top 1st basemen in the game.

He is projected for 23 homers and 111 RBI.

His top three seasons were 29 homers and 115 RBI. 27 homers and 94 RBI, and 16 homers and 83 RBI.  So what are you talking about "his production is far below his top three seasons"?  This is exactly what Youk gives you in a good year.  No more no less.

    Re: Youk 2011: what's happened/ing?

AT THIS POINT IN THE SEASON, YOUKILIS IS NOT A
#4 HITTER. HE LOOKS AT A LOT OF PITCHES WITH THE SOLE
INTENTION, IT SEEMS, OF WORKING A WALK. WHEN HE
GETS THE PITCH HE LIKES, HE IS STILL NOT DRIVING IT...
NOT IN THE LAST SEVERAL WEEKS. ONCE IN A WHILE HE
NAILS ONE, BUT LATELY ALL I SEE HIM DO IS GROUND OUT,
AND GET POUTY WITH UMPIRES WHEN THEY DARE TO CALL
A STRIKE ON HIM . THIS ACT GETS OLD, AND PISSES OFF THE
UMPIRES ALL OVER THE LEAGUE. IT COULD BE THAT HIS BODY
IS WEARING DOWN IN THE AUGUST DOG DAYS, AND HIS AGE
32 [THO THAT SHOULDN'T BE A FACTOR]; JETER IS 36 OR SO
AND IS PLAYING WELL. BUT YOUKILIS IS A DIFFERENT BODY
TYPE AND A DIFFERENT KIND OF HITTER. HE DOESN'T USE
THE OPPOSITE FIELD AND BASICALLY IS A RALLY KILLER AT
THIS POINT. THE POSITIVE IS THAT HE WORKS WALKS AND
GETS ON BASE, BUT GOOD PITCHERS SEEM TO CANCEL OUT
THIS STRATEGY AND HE ENDS UP HITTING INNOCENT
GROUNDERS AND DP'S . MAYBE WE BETTER START LOOKING
FOR A REPLACEMENT....SERIOUSLY....NOT RIGHT AWAY, OF
COURSE, BUT WE SHOULD BE TESTING THE MLB WATERS TO
SEE IF WE CAN GET A 3B WHO PUTS THE BALL IN PLAY MORE
OUR FARM SYSTEM SEEMS BARREN OF GOOD INFIELDERS.

He's still going to finish with around 25HR and 110 RBI but the batting average is sort of odd.  Maybe it has something to do with the shift to 3B?  Maybe it's just a down year?  Who knows.

What's happened is his move accross the diamond playing a more physically demanding position as expected has effected his stick. But he's still having a pretty good year (see below) his overall numbers are still pretty solid. He currently #1 in OPS among all qualifying 3B in all of MLB with 400 PA.

What's happening? Is he's been in a bit of a slump since the AS Game. Part of that could be he's beggining to wear down from the grind? It also can be a simple as he's in a slump and the only way to break out of it is to keep swinging! We all know that he'll find his stroke again and my guess is he'll end up with numbers close to his career norms.

Exactly, that's why I asked.  I hope the .960 OPS age 29-30-31 Youk will return, if not this Youk is still great. Some responses have been absurd and abusive, yours, Beantowne's and others thoughtful and reasonable.
