Toscanini's?  No way....the place smells like a urinal and the counter help could use some grooming.

My fave?  Mad Martha's on the Vineyard....and JP Licks when in Boston.

I agree that Mel Tharb in Wakefield is definitely up there. I just went there for the first time in many years and it was just as good as I remember.

Rancatore's in Lexington is also excellent. PERFECT creamy texture. I think he's the brother of the guy that owns Toscanini's.

I can't believe nobody mentioned Richardson's in Middleton! They supply so much of the ice cream around these parts.
You didn't put one ice cream place from Rhode Island. Most of the places listed were from MA. How can you call this New Englands best ice cream? Do more homework! Gray's Ice Cream in Tiverton and Bristol, RI is fantactic. Three Sisters in Providence, RI is also very good.
    Posted by scribe46
No offense, but you need to try some really fabulous ice cream...of which Gray's is NOT.  Many of the places people have written about are outstanding!

Re: New England's best ice cream?

Kimballs is terrible - quantity does not make up for quality.  Weston Dairy Joy is a joke - soft serve only, at about $5 a cone.

Blatantly missing from the list are Emack and Bolios, Herrells, and JP Licks.

Ericksons in Stow is great, as is Bedford Farms in Bedford and Concord - both are 100x better than Kimballs.

How could you snub Richardson's in Middleton?  Best ice cream stand (and distributor to smaller shops) on the North Shore!  A close second for me is the Sundae School in Dennis--a favorite since childhood.

Re: New England's best ice cream?

Who are these food editors? Did they just move to the area? I am 40 years old and grew up on the Northshore going to Richardson's in Middleton. I now live out in the Worcester area but still travel the hour drive when I want AMAZING ice cream that is worth the calories. It has been considered one of the BEST ice cream places for years, and the crowds prove it. During the warmer months you can expect to wait anywhere from 20-30 minutes to get ice cream. This is the case even though there are always 10-12 windows open outside and 2-3 counters inside. At peak times the lines are each 10-12 people deep! It is open year-round and you even encounter lines in the cooler months. Of course, it is all homemade (the shop is on the outskirts of their farm) and they even sell fresh milk as well. (Not to mention the great mini-golf course, driving range, and batting cages next door.)

I am so tired of these so-called "foodies" who ask local Cambridge and Brookline folks what they like and then ask the three friends they know who live out in the suburbs what they have heard of. Give me a break!
