Parents are busting out the markers and chalk in preparation for their children's first day of school and it has nothing to do with the school supply list.

If you follow Twitter and Facebook, it seems do-it-yourself back-to-school signs are all the rage: Your best friend's son or daughter holding up a big (or small) DIY sign that says: "First Day of 2nd Grade! 2012!"

Parents are showing off their creativity with these signs, using fancy writing, adding the exact date and year, ditching paper for mini chalkboards, hopping on the computer to make print-outs, and more. The result? An adorable homemade caption for the old scrapbook. Or, if you aren't the scrapbooking type, a picture worth "liking" on Facebook.

Local mom bloggers are posting the photos on their blogs and Twitter accounts.

Kate Hayes, who writes the blog Adventures in Parenting, posted these photos of her children holding up their signs.

Roxanna Sarmiento, who blogs about parents of boys on Frog & Snail Society, tweeted this photo of her son and his sign.

Did you make a back-to-school sign for your child?
