Second graders in Natick create song and video 'Call Tom Brady'
"Hey, it's the playoffs, we're going crazy, but 12 is his number, so call Tom Brady ..."
These are the newest parodied lyrics to the hit Carly Rae Jepsen song "Call Me Maybe," and they were written by second graders at Lilja Elementary School in Natick.
A few months ago an a capella group performed at the school and it inspired a group of girls in Jessie Bloch's second grade class to write a little something of their own.
"There was a group of girls who last week had changed just the chorus of 'Call Me Maybe' to 'Call Tom Brady.' It was really cute," said Bloch.
It inspired Bloch, a huge Patriots fan, to give the class a mission.
"I said if we get to the next round of playoffs, you'll have to rewrite the entire song," said Bloch.
And that's exactly what they did.
"They all have Google accounts in Natick, so they were able to go home and share the document with each other and help each other create it," said Bloch.
There are 21 kids in her class -- 11 girls and 10 boys. The girls did the singing and the entire class collaborated on the lyrics and choosing images for the video.
"The boys in the class wanted no part of the singing," said Bloch with a laugh. "But they helped them out."
The students wrote "98.9 percent" of the lyrics, she said. Adults helped out in just two spots, Bloch said -- with the word "yield" to rhyme with field and with information about Brady getting hurt in '08.
"It was really a group effort," said their proud teacher. "It is pretty cool."
It was also pretty cool when a former Patriot player's wife (who Bloch preferred not to name) saw it on Twitter and wrote to her, she said.
The project took a week to complete. And then Bloch put the video up on the school blog and YouTube.
"Everybody in school is singing it. And I can't stop singing it," said Bloch, who added jokingly, "My husband is ready to kill me."
