I personally think distraction works best at that young age. As malw said, time outs are really hard to enforce. Sometimes just being silly too will distract them from what they are upset about.

We too struggled with a boy name, and I also don't like nicknames. We ended up going with Nolan, but Grant and Dean were also strong contenders.
