The article states it was a Marine jet on loan to the Navy; perhaps the Navy originally reported it was one of their own planes and issued a subsequent correction.

To add to pattymcb's comment, the fact that two planes reported the laser would have allowed the FAA to use triangulation to estimate the location of the laser to a relatively high degree of accuracy.
