Museums in general are a great bargain, especially for young families, but on Sept. 29 they will be an unbeatable bargain. Museums participating in Smithsonian Magazine’s National Museum Day will all be free. Find the local list of participating museums here.

That means in Cambridge, Harvard Art Museums, Harvard Museum of Natural History, Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology, the Semitic Museum and the Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments will all be open at no cost. Details on those can be found here. Across the region, museums big and small are participating, including the Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of African American History and Battleship Cove in Fall River. It’s estimated that 1,400 museums nationwide will participate in the eighth annual celebration of museums.

Tickets can be downloaded at Smithsonian.com/museumday, where you will be asked to select one participating museum for free admission.

A single ticket on museum day is good for free admission for two on that day only.
