Handel and Haydn to embark on West Coast tour

On Wednesday the Handel and Haydn Society announced details of its plans for a California tour next month consisting of four performances between April 26 and May 1. The period orchestra and chorus, under the direction of Harry Christophers, will appear in Los Angeles’s iconic Walt Disney Hall and Santa Barbara’s Campbell Hall as well as in Berkeley for a pair of concerts presented by Cal Performances.
The tour repertoire will include Handel’s “Jephtha,” premiered in this country by H&H in 1855, and Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons,” with concertmaster Aisslinn Nosky.
When Christophers began his tenure as H&H artistic director in 2009, he stated his intention to raise the group’s national and international profile in part through more aggressive touring, as he has done with his UK-based ensemble The Sixteen. H&H’s most recent appearance in California was in 1996; its last European appearance was in 2007, at the Proms in London. Immediately following next month’s tour, Christophers and H&H will bring “Jephtha” to Symphony Hall in a pair of subscription performances on May 3 and 5.
