Jaguar, with pomp and circumstance appropriate to British royalty, unveiled its latest model, the S-Type sport sedan, at the Birmingham Motor Show (the British never drive, they motor in motor cars). The S-Type is smaller than the XJ8 sedan, less expensive than the XJ series, and offers a choice of engines. It is somewhat akin to Lincoln's new LS.

The performance choice is a 281-horsepower (287 ft/lb torque), 32-valve, double overhead cam, 4.0 liter V-8 that incorporates variable camshaft timing for improved torque and emissions. Also available is a 3.0 liter 240 horsepower V-6. Both engines are of aluminum construction.

For the ultimate in performance, the S-Type offers Jaguar computer active technology suspension (check that acronymn) and 17-inch wheels with Z-rated tires for high-speed peformance -- a lot higher than is legal on this side of the Atlantic. The CATS option is an adaptive ride control system that employs three accelerometers and a data processor to select appropriate shock rates as the car moves along the road. The S is, of course, a rear-drive automobile.

Don't look for it in showrooms just yet -- S-Type is slated for introduction as a 2000 model. It will be a while before production cranks up.
