Supported by the Works Progress Administration, photographer Berenice Abbott in 1935-39 took hundreds of photographs for the collection ``Changing New York.'' Only 97 were published at the time. In ``Berenice Abbott: Changing New York'' (New Press, $60), all 307 images are collected for the first time. Above, the Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Manhattan's East Side. [CORRECTION - DATE: Sunday, November 30, 1997: CORRECTION: Because of a copy editing error, the General Electric Building on Manhattan's East Side was misidentified in a caption in the Books section last Sunday. The photograph was from ``Berenice Abbott: Changing New York'' (New Press).]
