Athens -- This isn't the pretty city it was three or so decades ago because
there are more people, more buildings, and more cars, but it's a vibrant
place, and its ancient sites continue to enthrall. . . . Looking at the
Parthenon and other structures at the Acropolis, I try to envision them as
they once were: painted, blue, terra-cotta, black, and white. . . . Later, I
salute as we ride by a statue of Harry Truman, a hero to the Greek people,
too. . . . At the Olympic Stadium, we are reminded that Athens, and not
Atlanta, should have been the setting for the 100th modern Olympics. . . .
Wandering through the Plaka shopping district, I see Leonardo DiCaprio
T-shirts everywhere. But the T-shirt that impresses me says simply, ``Michael
Jordan.'' Why? Because it is worn not by a tourist but a Greek schoolboy. . .
. Must my wife snap a picture of every cat in Athens (and everywhere else, for
that matter)? . . . A scenic ride of an hour or so to Cape Sounion brings us
to the ancient Temple of Poseidon, perched high on a cliff with the Aegean Sea
churning below. Just call it our Poseidon adventure.
