Could it be, after 40 years, that we’re finally ready to start forgiving?
We’ve been having a laugh at the expense of 1970s fashion ever since Alicia Bridges stopped loving the nightlife (and no longer had to boogie). Synthetic fabrics, aggressively wide-legged trousers, and butterfly collars the size of Rhode Island simply didn’t hold up as well as Bill Blass predicted. But thanks in part to this week’s big Golden Globes winner “American Hustle,” fashion followers are now looking back at the 1970s a bit more sympahetically.
But it’s not just “American Hustle” that’s brought the nation this 1970s moment. Designers such as Diane von Furstenberg and Jenny Packham showed Spring/Summer 2014 collections that glamorized the decade.
