2009 Marathon Runner Profile
Krige Schabort
Hometown: Cedartown, Georgia, USA
Age: 45
Personal best: 1:26:04 (Boston, 2002)

Career notes: Schabort's best performances have come at the Honolulu Marathon, where he was the first wheelchair athlete inducted into the Honolulu Marathon Hall of Fame, in 2004, just prior to his seventh consecutive victory there. In 2008, Schabort finished second at the Boston Marathon for the fourth consecutive year, but says that at his age he cannot be disappointed with that result. Schabort competed in both the 2000 Paralympic Games in Sydney, where he won a silver medal in the marathon, and the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, where he finished a disappointing 15th. He also has a silver medal from the marathon at the 2002 IPC World Championships.

Personal notes: Schabort moved to the United States in 1997 to train and race professionally and build on a racing career that began in 1989, after he lost his legs in a bomb explosion while serving in the South African military in Angola. He currently lives in Cedartown, Ga., with his wife Caron, an occupational therapist, and their two sons.
