A pursuit that began in Saugus this morning ended with a crash on a Route 1 access ramp in Chelsea, State Police said. The driver, who was being pursued because of outstanding warrants, was arrested.

One police official familiar with the case said Saugus police were following the fleeing driver on Route 1 southbound when the driver veered off to the right and hit a pickup truck traveling down the Carter Street ramp, causing the truck to flip over.

State Police said the driver also sideswiped a car before hitting the pickup truck. The police official said the operator of the truck was going to be okay. State Police said no injuries were reported.

The police official said a dog that was inside the truck when it flipped over ran away from the scene of the crash, but was later retrieved several miles from the scene.

State Police were not involved in the pursuit, but are conducting the investigation because Route 1 is a state road.

No further information was immediately available.
