A person was shot this afternoon on Heath Street in Jamaica Plain, police said.

Police responded to 154 Heath St. at about 2:15 p.m., said Officer Nicole Grant, a Boston police spokeswoman.

Grant said the victim was taken to Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She did not know the person’s age, gender, or condition.

A neighbor at the scene who declined to give his name said he heard three shots and later saw two men speed away in a black four-door sedan.

He said their vehicle nearly struck another car at a nearby intersection.

The sedan “almost hit another car, but he left so fast, nobody took the [plate] number,” the man said.

Another neighbor, Rita Carias, 42, said she heard several shots and later saw rescuers place the victim, a man who appeared to be in his 30s or 40s, into an ambulance on a stretcher.

She said she did not know if the man was conscious.

“For this to happen, for me to walk by [on an errand], it’s crazy,” she said.

Police at the scene have taped off a large stretch of Heath Street as they continue to investigate.
