A Taunton man was taken into custody this afternoon after allegedly pointing a rifle at a police officer Monday evening, police said.

James White (Taunton police)

At about 7 p.m. Monday, an officer responded to a report of a disturbance on Rocky Woods Street, according to a statement by Taunton police.

James White, 30, who lives at the home, allegedly pointed a 7mm rifle at the responding officer, who then withdrew and waited for backup.

When a second officer arrived, police approached White. This time, police said, White allegedly took a handgun and pointed it at his own head before running into the woods.

Taunton police, with assistance from State Police, Dighton and Raynham police, searched the area for about four hours overnight, but could not locate White.

Police reported that White was taken into custody at about 2 p.m. without incident and will appear in Taunton District Court.

He faces charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and several firearms violations.
