Showers, thunderstorms in forecast
Keep the umbrella handy, just in case.
Showers and thunderstorms could pop up around the region today, forecasters said. The morning will be mostly cloudy, but some sun should peek through in the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures will be in the upper 70s and the humidity will be high.
“There could be some thunderstorms,” said meteorologist Charlie Foley, “but overall it’s going to be a cloudy, showery kind of day.”
The unsettled weather will continue into the weekend.
Saturday and Sunday will be mostly cloudy and bring the risk of isolated showers and thunderstorms.
“It’s not going to be a complete washout,” Foley said. “But when we do see the sun, that’s going to help trigger the storms.”
Foley said a warm, humid air mass is causing the wet weather. The skies should begin to clear by Sunday evening.
Boston was spared Thursday night when a warm front expected to cause torrential downpours, damaging winds, and dangerous hail did not deliver.
Foley said the front was a large, vast system, extending from New York to Texas, but because of the orientation of the air mass, the storms only grazed Southern New England.
“The closest it got to us was through Connecticut,” he said. “We thought it would re-form and reassert itself, but it really didn’t happen.”
