A woman was killed in a fire Sunday morning in Rehoboth, according to the Rehoboth Police Department.

Rehoboth Police received at a call at about 9:46 a.m. and arrived first on the scene on Pine Grove Road, according to a statement from the Rehoboth Police Department.

Officers reported heavy smoke pouring from the single-family home, and neighbors told them they believed the only resident, 66-year-old Donna Marques, was still inside.

They broke down several doors in an attempt o get inside, but were unable to enter because of the thick smoke, said the statement.

Firefighters arrived shortly after, entered the home and found Marques in the basement, and unsuccessfully tried to revive her, according to Rehoboth Fire Chief Robert Pray.

Two nearby residents tried to pound down the front door to save her, but were unsuccessful, said Pray.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it probably originated in the lower level, he said. Rehoboth police ruled out foul play.

Neighbors said Marques had lived in the home for at least 18 years.
