Runaway inmate at Pondville Correctional Facility in Norfolk apprehended after manhunt
Juan Lugo
An inmate serving a 12-to-14-year sentence at the Pondville Correctional Facility in Norfolk who escaped Friday afternoon was captured in Holyoke after a five-hour manhunt, a spokeswoman for the state prison system said.
Juan Lugo, 45, previously of Holyoke, was on a work crew when he allegedly escaped around 12:40 p.m. The state Department of Correction apprehension unit, State Police, and local police departments were alerted of the escape and aided in Lugo’s capture, said spokeswoman Diane Wiffin.
“He was apprehended without incident at 5:45 p.m. in Holyoke,“ Wiffin said.
Lugo was serving a sentence for an April 2003 armed burglary. He was eligible for parole in September 2015, and his release date was scheduled for September 2017, Wiffin said.
Lugo is expected to be moved to higher security, according to Wiffin. The Norfolk district attorney will determine whether to pursue criminal charges in the incident Friday, and Lugo could face a longer prison sentence, she said.
The exact location of Lugo’s apprehension was not immediately available. No further information was available Friday night.
