Woman struck and killed by Amtrak train in Attleboro

A woman was struck and killed by a Boston-bound Acela train passing through Attleboro around 1:20 p.m. today, officials say. The incident happened near Newport Avenue and the South Attleboro train station.

“It’s unclear why she was on the Acela tracks,” said MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo. MBTA Transit Police are now investigating the matter.

Amtrak Acela Express Train 2154 originated in Washington, D.C., and was carrying 197 people. None of the passengers and crew were injured, said Amtrak spokesman Cliff Cole.

Though one track reopened at 2:23 p.m., Pesaturo expects residual delays for Amtrak service in the Northeast Corridor as well as for the MBTA’s Providence/Stoughton commuter rail line, which run on the same tracks. The tracks are owned by the MBTA.

As of 2:10 p.m., Amtrak and local police officials remained at the scene, an Attleboro police dispatcher said.
