Police and firefighters have resumed searching for the body of a man who jumped into the Chicopee River from the Putts Bridge in Ludlow.

After a helicopter and search boats failed to find the man alive Tuesday, State Police divers began scouring the river today for a body, State Police spokesman David Procopio said.

Police have not identified the man, but Sergeant Tom Foye of the Ludlow police said police were working to confirm whether the man who jumped might be a Ludlow man who was reported missing Tuesday and left possible suicide notes.

Witnesses told officers that the man, who allegedly jumped around 3:15 p.m., survived the drop from the bridge and was still alive as several people tried to rescue him from the water, Foye said.

But after no body was found Tuesday and temperatures dropped, police gave up hope of finding the man alive, Procopio said.
