Snow is expected to bring a messy commute on Wednesday morning, weather service says

Get ready for a sloppy commute Wednesday morning, thanks to snow beginning just before daybreak and changing over to rain later in the morning, the National Weather Service in Taunton said.

One to two inches of snow is expected to fall in Boston, and areas north and west of the city will see two to four inches, said meteorologist Hayden Frank, on Tuesday night. Isolated parts of northern Worcester County and northwest Middlesex County could see five inches of snow.

Frank expects the precipitation to taper off early Wednesday afternoon.

“As always, when there is a possibility of winter weather, the mayor and Office of Emergency Management are monitoring the weather and if action needs to be taken, the appropriate resources will be utilized,” said John M. Guilfoil, a spokesman for Mayor Thomas M. Menino, on Tuesday night.

The rest of the week will be clear with a high pressure system settling over the Bay State.

Temperatures will fluctuate from the mid-30s into the 40s during the next several days. A cold front moving through Thursday will drop Friday’s overnight low into the teens in Boston.

Temperatures should recover nicely over the weekend with highs in the 40s and clear skies throughout the state, the weather service said.
