Norwood police officer unharmed after cruiser crashes into a pole due to icy road
A Norwood police officer escaped injury early today when he lost control of his cruiser on an icy road and slid into a pole, Norwood police spokesman Kevin Grasso said.
The unidentified officer was driving through the intersection of Union and Sumner streets just after 2 a.m. looking for a suicidal man when the cruiser slid off the street and into a pole, Grasso said.
At 2 a.m., weather conditions were foggy and misty, with visibility down to 2½ miles, according to weather reports from the Norwood Memorial Airport, less than 3 miles away from the crash site.
Grasso said the incident was weather-related and that while another vehicle was on the street when crash took place, the driver of the other vehicle was not involved and is not being sought by police.
The Crown Victoria cruiser will likely be replaced because it sustained significant front-end damage, Grasso said.
The man believed to be suicidal was located, Grasso said.
