3 injured as wrong-way driver slams into two cars on Interstate 495 in Wareham

Three people were hurt early today in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 495 North in Wareham that involved three vehicles, State Police said

State Police said a man traveling south on the northbound side of the highway at 12:07 a.m. slammed into two cars.

Kevin H. Schmidt, 24, of Middleborough was driving the wrong way in a 2004 Ford Ranger pickup truck, police said. He was rushed to Tobey Hospital in Wareham with serious injuries and was later transferred to a Boston hospital.

Police said Schmidt’s truck hit a 2012 Nissan Sentra sedan driven by Lisa B. Calixte, 26, of Randolph and a 1996 Geo Prizm sedan driven by Eileen M. O’Donnell, 48, of Falmouth.

Authorities said both women suffered injuries that were not believed to be life threatening.

State Police said they are trying to determine why Schmidt was driving his truck the wrong way and whether charges are warranted.
