Report: Caroline Kennedy considered as US envoy to Japan
Caroline Kennedy is being considered for possible appointment as US ambassador to Japan, according to a published report.
Kennedy, who is the daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy, is a leading candidate for President Obama’s nomination, Bloomberg News reports this morning.
The news service cited two people familiar with the matter. It reported that the president has signed off on her nomination, but she hasn’t been vetted yet.
An attorney and an editor of books on constitutional law, American history, politics, and poetry, Kennedy is president of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation. She also served from 2002 to 2011 as the vice chairwoman of the Fund for Public Schools, which raised money for public school reform and encouraged New Yorkers to volunteer in city schools, according to the presidential library website.
In 2008, she declared herself a candidate for a New York US Senate seat, but shortly thereafter withdrew her name. She reportedly was a possible nominee as ambassador to the Vatican in 2009.
She endorsed Obama for president in 2008 and last year. She said in September that Obama had lived up to the ideals of her father and her uncles, the late senators Edward M. Kennedy and Robert Kennedy.
