Weekend to be free of snow and rain

Cheer up, weather-weary Bay Staters: A February that brought record-setting precipitation will end on a dry note and usher in the first snow- and rain-free weekend in nearly a month, the National Weather Service said.

Today will be welcome relief from soggy Wednesday. Highs will reach the lower 50s in Boston and areas in Southeastern Massachusetts, and the sun will peek at times through mostly cloudy skies. There is a slight chance of brief showers throughout the day, said weather service meteorologist Charlie Foley.

Temperatures will drop overnight to around freezing. Some areas in the outer suburbs could see temperatures dipping slightly below freezing, Foley said, creating conditions for black ice on some secondary roads and driveways.

On Friday, highs will be rise to the low 40s, just above the normal high of 41 degrees, with a slight chance of snow showers before 9 a.m. and rain later in the morning.

Clouds will remain through the weekend as highs are expected to remain in the low 40s, with overnight lows just below freezing.

“It won’t be an ideal weekend,” Foley said, but for those sick of shoveling, it will be a welcome relief.

Just don’t get too comfy: Another storm set to churn up the mid-Altantic is on the horizon for mid-week.

“It has the potential to be a significant storm for next week,” Foley said, “though the details are pretty preliminary.”
