Salem man dies after being found unresponsive in holding cell; DA investigating
A Salem man charged with domestic assault has died after being found unresponsive in a police station holding cell, proscutors said.
Hugh Kerr, 61, was charged with domestic assault and battery after his arrest Monday, and placed into custody for the night, said Essex district attorney’s spokeswoman Carrie Kimball Monahan.
At about 3:50 a.m. Tuesday, police were on a routine check of the cells, and found Kerr unresponsive. He was transported to Salem Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Monahan said.
An autopsy will be performed by the state medical examiner to identify a cause of death, Monahan said.
The incident remains under investigation by the district attorney’s office.Melissa can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org or on Twitter @Melissa__Hanson
