The last time we saw actor-director-writer Tom O’Brien, it was spring in New York City and he was screening his Massachusetts-based movie “Fairhaven” at the Tribeca Film Festival. Now the locally bred triple threat is preparing for the Boston-area release of “Fairhaven” while he works on his next feature, a complicated love story called “Manhattan Romance.” O’Brien tells us that he started shooting his latest film during Superstorm Sandy in the fall. His crew had to stop production on the film for a day, but were able to finish the project on time in Brooklyn. O’Brien — who wrote, directed, and starred in “Fairhaven” — also acts in this new project. His cast includes Gaby Hoffman of “Field of Dreams” and Katherine Waterston, daughter of Sam Waterston, whose family still has a house in Mattapoisett. According to the “Manhattan Romance” Facebook page, the film will also feature O’Brien’s friend Chris Messina, who worked with O’Brien on “Fairhaven” and now stars with Boston-bred Mindy Kaling on Fox’s “The Mindy Project.” Messina’s wife, Jennifer Todd, runs Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s production company. Yes, small Boston world. “Fairhaven,” which is about Massachusetts men coming to terms with their adult relationships, debuts at the Somerville Theatre next week. No word on when we’ll see “Manhattan Romance,” but these things usually take a year.
