Dustin Pedroia finally joined Twitter — or did he?

Friends and teammates have long pestered Dustin Pedroia to get on Twitter. The Red Sox scrappy second baseman seemed a natural for 140-character quips.
But Pedroia was stubbornly resistant, saying he doesn’t have the time. Then, Monday night, @15Lasershow showed up. The next morning, Pedroia was asked if it was his account.
“Ain’t me, man,” he said.
Third baseman Will Middlebrooks, a Twitter maven, said he created a fake account and was posing as Pedroia. So the news went out — via Twitter, of course — that the account was fake.
About 20 minutes later, Pedroia claimed it was, in fact, his account. He said he was trying to look up something talk show host Jim Rome had said, and he started the account, not realizing you could look something up via the Web.
Then this exchange happened:
Confused Sox beat writer: “You said it was fake.”
Pedroia: “Yeah, I know. But it’s me.”
Confused Sox beat writer: “Now I look like a dope.”
Pedroia: “Now?”
Pedroia insists he won’t be tweeting. We shall see. We kind of hope he does because we think he’d be fun to follow. As of Tuesday afternoon, Pedroia’s account had no avatar but it did have 21,465 followers.
