MBTA builds bathroom for transsexual employee

By Associated Press, 06/06/00

BOSTON -- The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has built a new bathroom at its Cleveland Circle maintenance garage for a transsexual worker.

The MBTA built the new bathroom because the worker is in the middle of changing genders from male to female, and is not comfortable sharing facilities with males or females, MBTA officials said.

The new bathroom, which includes a shower stall, toilet and sink, cost the MBTA $8,000. But any employee who needs privacy can use the new bathroom, officials said.

A spokesman for the International Foundation for Gender Equity in Waltham said people in the middle of changing genders often face hardship.

"The person who's transitioning is absolutely stuck in the middle with no place to go,' Sara Herwig told the Boston Herald. "Some companies don't understand that."
